When my husband and I were engaged, we moved in together I had all of these wonderful ideas about cohabitation and how organized and wonderful we would be.
Yeah, right.
One of the things that did help a lot though, with the house AND our first year of marriage was a great idea I got from Organized Home.com about creating a Household Notebook. (We call ours “The House of Brown”). It’s just a 3 ring binder, with printouts and tabs of the following:
- Contact info for each side of the family and friends (“What’s your brother’s email address again?”)
- Taxi service phone numbers (living in Brooklyn that’s essential)
- Take-out menus (so we can order out if we don’t feel like cooking and we have guests)
- Chores - a description of what has to be done in each room of the house, this has actually been more helpful than it sounds… (“Yes, cleaning the kitchen means you have to mop the floor too.”)
- Calendar – printed out from the web with family and friends’ birthdays, anniversaries, recurring social events, etc. (“Wait, ALL of their birthdays are THIS WEEK? Why didn’t you tell me?)
- Neighbors names and numbers (“UPS is coming today and we won’t be home.”)
- Semi-emergency contact info – electrician, plumber, handyman, appliance repair, car oil change, contractor (“The neighbor wants to know who did our kitchen.”)
- Emergency contact info – police, fire, ambulance, pet emergency care,
- Food recipes- (I put the favorites and the “never-fails” in here)
- Household recipes – (“Babe, what do I need to make the dishwashing detergent again?”)
I also put a pencil holder with pens and a highlighter in there too so we can make quick changes if necessary. For security reasons, we don’t put things in there like Bank account numbers, social security numbers or passwords. Just everyday stuff that one of us might need to know. Some people use the calendars on their computers for this info, or sync their PDAs together. I like having a tangible note book, because it’s quick and easy. This has helped us in so many ways. My husband feels like he doesn’t have to ask me for every little thing, and I can finally remember when his best friend’s childrens’ birthdays are.

What an excellent idea! It’s much better than keeping everything in a junk drawer, lol. My husband is always asking me where something is or when some upcoming event is. You have saved our household! Thank you, Savvybrown.
