What’s the Deal With High Fructose Corn Syrup? Part 2

There’s a current series of TV ads running right now that make High Fructose Corn Syrup sound like it’s really not that bad for you “in moderation”. The problem with that statement is, we don’t cook with it in our homes. You can’t just go to the grocery store and buy a bottle of high-fructose corn syrup. It’s found in packaged goods and fast food, so we really don’t know how MUCH we’re actually taking in in any given product.

I personally, have made a point not to “knowingly” eat anything with HFCS in it, but I will admit, it takes work. You really have to check labels to make proper substitutions. Here’s a list of foods that have HFCS along with substitutions that we’ve made in our household.

Food with HFCS Food without HFCS
Aunt Jemima Pancake Syrup Trader Joe’s 100% Pure Maple Syrup
Hershey’s Chocolate Syrup Organic Alaska Chocolate syrup
Heinz Ketchup Heinz Organic Tomato Ketchup/or Salsa
Crystal Light Iced Tea Homemade iced tea
Smuckers Jelly Polaner’s All Fruit
Capri sun Juicy juice 100% Juice
Ocean Spray Cranberry Juice Langers Cranberry juice
Kellogg’s Froot Loops Cereal New Morning Fruit-e-Os
Eggo Whole Grain Waffles Van’s Buttermilk Waffles
Miracle Whip Trader Joe’s Mayo
Chips Ahoy 100 Calorie Paks Handful of real chocolate chips
Robitussin cough Syrup Natureade Herbal Expectorant (or homemade)
Motts applesauce Motts Organic Applesauce
Pepperidge Farms 100% Natural Breads Ezekiel Bread
Store bought bread Fresh bakery bread
Yoplait yogurts Fage greek yogurt

What are some things that you’ve found that have HFCS that you’ve substituted in your diet? Or your family’s diet?

We’ve substituted or gotten rid of nearly all of the things you substituted. Instead of icecream we blend bananas with almond milk and freeze it. It comes out as icecream/milkshake lol I’ll cut the banana up in advance sometimes and freeze them so they act as ice and fruit at the same time. We also make fruit smoothies when we have a taste for icecream. :)

FYI Newman’s makes an Oreo type cookie that does not contain HFCS. They even have mint flavor too! Back to Nature makes and Oreo style cookie as well.

Campbell’s Chicken Noodle soup has HFCS. It isn’t even sweet. I make my own soup now with organic free-range chicken broth.

@Tasha Wow thanks! Sexy loves cookies, I’ll look for those

      @Andrea Good for you!

All found in regular grocery stores: salad dressings and meat marinades. Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods don’t have HFCS.

Girl!!! I saw this lady on TV saying how if we eliminate HFCS out of our diets we’d see so many changes in our health including weightloss. Immediately I went to my kitchen to see what I was putting in my body. Even the things I thought were healthy had HFCS like my Fat Free Wishbone Italian Salad Dressing!!!

    • Savvy says:

Oh absolutely! Everything made my Slim Fast has it too! You’ll even find it in those healthy frozen dinners. It’s a shame. The problem is, we’ve gotten so used to the taste, that things that don’t have it, don’t taste “right”. You really have to stick it out and re-acclimate your taste buds.

I keep trying to eliminate HFCS and it’s soooo difficult. It’s in so many things I love!

    • Savvy says:

Hi Vida! I know. it’s really difficult sometimes.

Since my hubby is adamant about eating a certain way, he read labels and understands what certain things mean (cuz sometimes they change the name around and you think it’s something different when it’s not – cuz he avoids corn syrup as well).

I HAVE noticed that simple things like lunch meat, tomato sauce, salad dressing, “wheat” bread, etc have HFCS in it . . . and I’m wondering WHY? Even the ones that claim to be “health smart” on their label. You really can’t shop at the “regular” chain grocer stores. We do a lot of shopping at Whole Foods and other smaller natural grocers in the Bay Area and farmers markets.
