Neti_potsml

The Neti Pot is named for Jala Neti, an old cleansing technique of the Indian Hatha Yoga tradition.  Neti pots are used for what doctors call “nasal irrigation”. By wetting the lining of the nose with saline solution (which is basically salt and water), you can help those little hairs in your nose called cilia to push out mucous. This is very helpful if you have chronic conditions such as sinusitis and allergies. I will admit, when my husband first explained to me how to use a Neti Pot, I couldn’t picture it. I kept thinking that I’d accidentally drown myself, and I INSISTED that he be there when I used the darn thing.

But to my surprise, it was very effective at clearing my nasal passages, and (once you get the angle right), pretty easy. The effects last for a while and it’s cheaper and healthier than buying over the counter decongestants. My husband swears by the Neti Pot for his seasonal allergies. How you use it is pretty simple….

Fill the Neti Pot just up to the indicated line (between 1/4 cup and a 1/2cup)

Then add the recommended amount of Sea Salt (usually abt 1/2 teaspoon) and stir

You then hold the Neti pot up to one nostril and tilt your head. The goal is to let the water pass through one nostril and pour out through the other. If you tilt your head too far back, the water will go down your throat, and if you tilt your head too far forward, the water will come out the same way you’re pouring it in. When you hold your head just right, it’ll look like this.

Repeat whenever you’re feeling congested, but I do suggest speaking to a doctor if you feel the need to irrigate more than 3 times a day. (More than that and you may dry out the membranes of your nose).

If you’ve never used a Neti pot, then it’s a good idea to buy a kit with the salt included along with instructions. They are usually ceramic (I think those are easier to clean) but there are rubber and plastic ones out there for those of you who are accident prone. Check out the store to see more!

Does anybody else out there use a Neti Pot? What ailment/symptom to you use it for? How often do you use it?

I love my neti pot!! If I start using it before the allergy season really kicks in, I can avoid getting sick altogether and that makes it so worthwhile for me. Now if I could only convince my hubby to use it, we’d save a ton in tissue costs!

LOL! I know Rahshell. I was the same way. But one night it was late, the pharmacy was closed and I was so stuffed up I couldn’t breathe, and I just HAD to do something. Now I use it when ever I get stuffed up!
