This email exchange is from reader mrs.cuunninham.07  about her doctor wanting to give her daughter a medicine with some ingredients she wasn’t comfortable with.
This  is an example of how you need to ask your doctor questions, and KEEP asking them…

“… After having to take my 10 month old to her pediatrician for some intestinal issues (there a stomach bug spreading here in SC) I was given a Rx that has 2 parabens listed in the ingredients. Although both parabens are the last 2 ingredients it still scares me. What is the best way to handle such a dilemma? I know that Corigan needs to get better and this is what her Doctor has recommended to help the problem but my “Mommy instincts” tell me there has to be another way specifically a more natural way…”

I’m not a doctor… but I do question why your daughter is being given medication for just a “stomach bug”. I could see if she had some type of bacterial infection, but I would need more info. You should trust your “mommy instincts” and ask your doctor what the following…
- Is the medication specifically for your daughter’s particular ailment? Or is it just “preventing” the stomach bug that’s going around?
- You would feel more comfortable trying to solve this problem naturally first if possible, and then if that doesn’t work you’d be willing to try the medication. Is there anything else that you could give her to eat or drink that might work?

Keep a record of how often her stomach causes problems, what her symptoms are, when and if she has diarrhea, when and if she’s throwing up, weight loss, what types of food does she favor? Salty? Sweet? Bitter? Hot ? Cold? Are her hands and feet cold often? Is she on any other medication? Does she have diaper rash? Does she have allergies? what are those symptoms? I know it seems like a lot, but make sure your doctor knows all of the above. If she still insists on the medication, then see if there is a reputable naturaopathic doctor in your area. If not, don’t be afraid to get a second opinion. In the meantime make sure your daughter stays well hydrated, and if your daughter is NOT allergic to ginger, try making some chamomile tea and put a slice of real ginger in it and a squeeze of fresh lemon into it. Let it cool a bit, and then let your daughter sip it, it might calm her tummy a bit. DON’T sweeten it with honey.

Hi Savvy, [she] does have a bacterial infection that’s why the doctor prescribed the medication. Sorry I wasn’t too clear on that :-) . Well I’ve spoken to the nurse at her pediatricians office, she informed me that if I didn’t feel comfortable about the meds then I def didn’t HAVE to give it to [her] b/c she can get better on her own as long as I watched her diet & keep her hydrated. Which I have been. I just don’t understand why a Dr would prescribe meds with parabens listed in the ingredients. My mom has  info for a  naturaopathic doctor so I can back up her pediatricians rec’s on medications. I appreciate you taking the time to hear me out. I don’t really have anyone else to discuss these things with besides my mother and we are both taking this journey together so we have more to learn. Thanks again!
It’s really important to ask your doctor questions and not just to take what they’re saying at face value. And if they don’t want to answer your questions…find another doctor.

Thanks mrs.cuunninham.07 for allowing me to share your story! If you have topics you’d like to discuss, or just have questions that you need answers to, feel free to email me at savvy@savvybrown.com
