If you’re a regular here, then you’ve seen the Red Pump Badge on the right sidebar. Well that pump is there in honor of…

National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day – (NWGHAAD)

I first heard about Rock the Red Pump on Afrobella’s site. It was started by her friend Luvvie of Awesomely Luvvie (a VERY funny blog by the way) and Karyn of The FabGiver. The goal of the campaign is to bring awareness to NWGHAAD and to create an open dialogue about HIV/AIDS and how it impacts the community.

So today this blog is dedicated to AIDS awareness and education. Here are some sobering stats:

  1. Every 9 1/2 minutes someone is infected with HIV in the United States.
  2. Within certain populations in America, the prevalence of HIV-infected people is higher than in certain parts of Africa.
  3. MAC AIDS Fund released a study examining sexual behaviors of British women, 73% of women never tested for HIV/AIDS – Press Release
  4. At the end of 2006 there were an estimated 1.1 million people living with HIV infection, of which almost half (46%) were black/African American
  5. For black women living with HIV/AIDS, the most common method of transmission was high-risk heterosexual contact
  6. More than 25 million people have died of AIDS since 1981
  7. 390,000 children die of AIDS every year.
  8. 580,000 children will die of AIDS in the next two years.
  9. The sharpest rise of people affected by AIDS are Black women over 50
  10. Of the 2.1 million people who died of AIDS in 2007, one in every seven was a child.
