I’ve fallen in love with greek yogurt. There’s a few brands out there, among them Fage (pronounced Fah-yeh), Oikos ( by Stonyfield Farm) and Chobani. Greek yogurt is much thicker than regular yogurt because it has a higher fat content and is strained longer. The result makes it the consistency of sour cream, but the higher fat content gives it more protein as well.
1/4 cup (2oz.) plain 2% greek yogurt
1.5 tbsps strawberry preserves
1 tsp ground flaxseed (optional)
Cal: 125; Pro: 5gms
The thing I love about it is that because it’s so thick, I eat a lot less and it fills me up! (I usually buy the 2% or 0% fat versions to keep the calories down). It can be expensive, up to $2 each for a small 5.3 oz.container. I find it’s much more cost effective to buy it in the larger 17oz. container at $5. I can get 6.5 servings out of the larger container by just adding my own fruit! Preserves are more natural than jams or jellies, it’s made with real fruit and there’s no high-fructose corn syrup added, Polaner makes some that’s great, but I like buying it fresh from the farmer’s market when I can. Flaxseed is excellent at lowering cholesterol, blood pressure and inflammation.
What does the greek yogurt taste like? I see it at Trader Joe’s all of the time, but have been too scared to try it. The fact that its more filling is great because I use it as a snack filler, but I’m hungry before my 2 hours are over. However, I usually get the fruit flavored yogurts from TJ’s and add a piece of fruit with it. When I’m in prime condition this little snack lasts probably 45 minutes and then I’m looking for something else to eat…usually followed by some nuts.
Hi Sisterboyd! Thanks for stopping by! Plain Greek yogurt actually tastes like sour cream, but a little sweeter. You can buy greek yogurt with fruit that you mix in, or “fruit on the bottom”, but I fing that it’s cheaper to buy it plain, and just scoop out a couple of tablespoons and mix it with preserves. Strawberry is my favorite, but it also tastes great with honey, peach, even those canned mandarin oranges. Yum!
I purchased a small container of the Fage recently and added blueberries. I loved it. I purchased a larger container of the Chobani and blackberries. Thanks for the suggestion.
You’re so welcome! Isn’t it yummy?
This morning I tried the greek yogurt with the preservatives this morning and it was so good! Did my grocery shopping last night and one of my regular stops is Trader Joe’s. I got the small container of low-fat greek yogurt. And I got some strawberry preservers from there too; which I hate because amazingly its more expensive than Whole Foods. This morning I took 2 heaping teaspoons of yogurt and about 1 teaspoon of strawberry and blackberry preserves (probably too much preserves), mixed it and yummy to my tummy! I coupled it with a piece of my favorite toast…Trader Joe’s 9 grain, whole wheat, fat-free bread. Of course the hungry bug will be calling me in a few minutes, but it was good way to start my day
Wow…interesting recipes
