My 12 Clear Skin Rules

I’ve gotten so many emails asking me how I take care of my skin. Instead of trying to address everything is one post, over the next few weeks, I’m going to share different aspects of my skin-care routine.

Everyone’s skin is different, and I’m lucky enough not to have had any major skin issues, BUT I’m human, I get pimples and pock marks,  dark spots and dark circles under my eyes just like everyone else. One thing I’ve noticed about my skin is that it usually tells me when there’s something wrong in my diet, or with makeup I’ve tried within MINUTES.

So here are the 12 basic rules I live by for healthy, clear skin:

1. Wear full makeup only on special occasions- Most days I wear just concealer, eyeliner, lip liner, mascara and lip gloss
2. Wear paraben-free mineral makeup – I am currently using Bare Escentuals, but I’m open to trying other brands
3. Drink water - my face (and hair) get really dry when I don’t get enough water
4. Wash, Tone and Moisturize – at LEAST once a day (I’ll go into what I use in another post)
5. Don’t wear blush – I haven’t found a blush yet that doesn’t make me break out. I just smear a little lipstick onto the apples of my cheeks, and keep it movin’
6. Use makeup brushes with caps on them – Bacteria can build up on them when you just dump them in your makeup bag
7. Wash your makeup brushes regularly – Rinse in warm water, soak them in rubbing alcohol, air dry
8. Monthly Bentonite Clay masks – I admit I’ve been going about 6-8weeks lately (but I can tell the difference).
9. Don’t pick pimples – The times that I have ignored this rules, I’ve regretted it, and I have the battle scars to prove it
10. Get sleep – My eyes looks TERRIBLE when I don’t get enough sleep. (Sexy says, I’m also VERY cranky, so that doesn’t help either)
11. Keep a spoon in the freezer – for use on my eyes, when I don’t follow Rule#10
12. Eat real food – I don’t drink soda…ever. I don’t eat fast food, I don’t like pizza, and I don’t eat hard candy. I don’t eat pork , red meat or chicken. I eat only freshwater hormone-free fish. I try to eat as much organic food as possible, but my kryptonite is carbs. (I love me some bread!) But again, I try to eat wheat-free Ezekiel Bread when it’s on sale. I also LOVE dark chocolate.

I’ve changed my diet to vegetarian (but I haven’t gone totally organic or particularly healthy). I also started using a mix of whole milk and ground oatmeal to clean my face, alcohol-free witch hazel (I can’t remember the brand, but I can only find it at health stores for about $9) and olive oil as a moisturizer. Noticed great results in less than a week.

Hi Deauna. Hmm alcohol-free witch hazel. I’ve never seen that!

The brand is called Thayer’s. I initially found it at GNC, then I was home in Cleveland and found it at a natural store in a variety of mixes.

      Thanks Deauna!

I Love bentonite clay masks. Aloe juice and jojoba oil are staples for my skin care routine. I swab my face morning and night with aloe after washing to help regenerate healthy skin and jojoba is my makeup remover and skin oil balancer.

Why wheat-free bread? Isn’t wheat supposed to be good for us? What about whole wheat pasta?

Can you also explain the frozen spoon rule?
      Thanks!

    • Savvy says:

@Tyrika yeees. I use jojba to moistuize also, and nothing beats Bentonite clay, I put it in my hair too!

    • Savvy says:

@J Whole wheat and whole grains are generally good for you. But we tend to eat too much. I’ve found that too much wheat and sugar makes me breakout. I also have fibroids, and wheat is not good for them either.
I keep a spoon in the freezer, and when I have puffy tired eyes, I put the spoon over each eye for a minute or so. It helps bring down the puffiness a bit. I hope that helps!

I no longer buy commerical facial cleansers. Instead I do the oil cleansing method. I have noticed wonderful results. Now I’m working on trying to figure out what natural products I can use to fade old acne scars.

I also do Neem face masks a couple of times a week. I drink lots of water, eat lots of vegetables( I cook vegan & vegetarian meals a few times a week), stopped eating pork and red meat a couple of years ago, and I try to take my fish oil pills regularly. :)
