As I mentioned in the post My 12 Clear Skin Rules, at least once a day you should cleanse, tone and moisturize your face. (Yes, gentlemen, that goes for you too).  I do this once a day in the morning.

Here’s what I use:

  • Black Soap (either raw or a bar soap) Despite the name this is NOT just for African-American skin.
  • Witch hazel – the good old fashioned stuff is great!
  • Heritage Rosewater – This kind does not have any alcohol or perfume in it, it’s just electrified water and rosewater.
  • 100% Aloe Vera Gel – This is not the green paraben-filled stuff. This is usually clear. I really like Fruit of the Earth but there are other brands out there.
  • Organic Jojoba Oil -  It is cheaper to buy regular jojoba oil, but I like usiung the organic on my face, and as you’ll see, you don’t need to use much at all!
  • Organic Rosehip Oil – This is the HG (holy grail) product of my skin care regimen. It’s anti-wrinkle and anti-aging properies are incredible!

Here’s my routine:

1. Clean - I wash my face with black soap and pat dry with a clean dry cloth

2. Tone - I take a cotton ball or pad, and dip it in a 50-50 mixture of witch hazel and rosewater (which I keep in a little glass jar wuth a cork on the sink)

3. Homemade Moisturizer

  • I put 1 squirt of Organic Aloe Vera Gel
  • 1 drop of organic jojoba oil
  • 2 drops of organic rosehip oil
  • 1 spray or 1 drop of rosewater

After my face has dried a bit from the toner, I put all of the above into the palm of my hand and rub together and then apply with a circular motion all over my face and neck.

That’s IT!

The great thing about all of these ingredients is that because you use so little they will last you a YEAR, making them really economical. How Savvy is that?

These ideas are great, but I have acneaic skin :( and use nano cyclic silver as a cleanser and witchhaze for a toner – what do you recommmend for my skin as a moisturuzer? I tend to want to shy away from oil based items….
      Awaiting your answer,

P.S. – at the gym a friend was using Kinky curly on her hair!

    • Savvy says:

@tracey Wow really? I’m going to do a little research and get back to you. Where did your friend find Kinky curly in Bermuda?

    • Tracey says:

Thanx, Savvy. I believe she got the hair stuff in the U.S. as it was cheaper than what she found here!

I just realized your site is selling products now, that makes it easy for me. Which do you prefer in terms of Black Soap… raw or bar? Is there a difference between the two.

    • Savvy says:

I like raw, but I’m currently finishing up a bar that someone gave me. The bars sold in the Savvy Shop (as well as most black soap bars) are mixed with vitamin e or cocoa butter or both. The raw black soap is chunky and kind of has the consistency of hard shea butter. It is made from the ash of leaves and bark of certain trees and is not mixed withth4myFor both kinds buy a soap dish with a top to keep it in, it can get messy sometimes. HTH

    • Tracey says:

Hey Savvy, is the black soap good for for oily/combination skin? I also worry that cleansers for oily skin may dry my skin out….I’m not in the ‘aging skin’ group :) but I understand that I need to moisturise it as well.

P.S. – I think the KinkyCurly is too expensive in Bermuda and she buys it overseas.

I have seborrheic dermatitis; might have to remove the witchazel, but the moisturizer sounds like something I could look into and enjoy making! Thanks! :)

    • Savvy says:

@Victoria Yes! with Dermatitis that would be too drying for you. Maybe you could use Aloe Vera Juice?
