There is nothing more refreshing on a hot summer day than a nice cool glass of lemonade. Unfortunately most of the lemonade that you get at the store is full of High Fructose Corn Syrup. Here’s a recipe that I use often, and Sexy usually will come home with a bag of organic lemons and a smile to entice me to make more.
Homemade Lemonade Recipe
(makes 1 quart)
Ingredients:
1 cup sugar (I use raw sugar or sucanat, but any sugar will do)
1.5 cups boiling water
3 large organic lemons
more filtered water to fill container
Directions:
Boil 1.5 cups of water in a saucepan.when the water is fully boiling, pour in 1 cup of sugar, and stir occassionally ntil fully dissolved. Remove from heat when it’s all dissolved to let cool. While cooling cut 3 thin slices of lemon, and then squeeze the juice from 3 large organic lemons and pour juice and slices into a 1 quart container. Then pour sugar water into the same container and fill the rest of the container with more filtered water. Done!
Making the sugar water (or liquid sugar) helps the sugar to dissolve nicely instead of adding it cold and having it sink to the bottom. This also saves calories because you won’t need to add any extra sugar.
I like to put ginger into my lemonade, in an effort to sort of re-create Trader Joe’s Lemon Ginger Echinacea juice. I create a syrup by taking some peeled ginger and putting it into water on medium-high heat until it seems done (sorry, that’s not very scientific, lol). Then I strain the ginger out and use the ginger juice/syrup. I also like to add fresh mint to my lemonade when I drink it. Mm-mm-good, just in time for summer.
Shones, that reminds of my vegan outing last week. We have a spot called VegiSoul (www.vegisoul.com) here in LA and they have the best lemonade. They have ginger and mint lemonade; which I haven’t tried yet, but they smell heavenly! I might just have to try it sent you mentioned it and told me how to make it
@SisterBoyd My friend took me to VegiSoul a couple of times; I loved the aloe vera juice! Shones, that ginger sounds like a good idea.
Savvy, what is your take on all these commercials talking about how high fructose corn syrup is nothing to worry about?
@Yvette I agree I’m going to try ginger next time! Those commercials are paid for by the Corn Refiners Association. That’s the consortium of companies that actually MAKE HFCS. The problem I have with the commercials, is 1. they’re condescending 2. they’re not specific, they say HFCS is fine “in moderation” but what measurement is moderation? since we don’t know half the stuff it’s in, that statement doesn’t make sense. If you go out and eat or drink something with HFCS in it right now will it kill you? Absolutely not. But if you constantly eat it, you will begin to aquire a whole host of health problems. That’s really good information. Now my mind’s working on how to influence my family to cut back slowly. I’m the youngest so they tend not to listen to me, but I’ll find a way
Thank you for enlightening.
I LOVE lemonade but I’ve never made it oddly enough. But I will now!
I love homemade lemonade. I like to add fresh or frozen berries to my mine and sometimes a drop of vanilla flavoring. And If I’m in the mood for some bubbles I’ll add a little bit of seltzer or sparkling water.
And please don’t get me started on HFCS. Can hardly buy anything from a conventional grocery store without that stuff in it. And I hate those goofy commercials that says it’s ok and it’s just like sugar.
@Jasmin oooh fresh berries yum!
I cant wait to try this!
Thanks!
Homemade lemonade takes me back to my childhood. My grandma had us in the kitchen rolling lemons til our palms were itching lol I do mine a little differently than she did. I add frozen strawberries to mine in place of ice
I usually make my iced tea this way never even occurred to me to make lemonade the same way. Thanks. @afrikanlatina the strawberry idea is great my nephew loves the strawberry lemonade from Red Robin I will have to try that.

[...] I don’t have enough lemons to make Homemade Lemonade, I make this instead. I ALWAYS have teabags and it’s so simple it saves us from buying yet [...]
Sorry guys, HFCS id pretty bad stuff. However, ANY sugar whether it is in the form of honey, “raw”, brown, etc. whatever, is unhealthy especially with the amounts needed to sweeten lemonade. Our livers were never meant to handle the influx of that much sugar in a sitting.
I love making homemade lemonade in the summer. I have a couple of recipes I turn to, but no matter what it leaves the store bought versions in the dust.
