1. Dried Fruit – raisins are dried grapes, grapes are a fruit, therefore raisins are a fruit. Put them into oatmeal, stews, I even use them to sweeten up curry. A nice sweet close cousin? Currants. Dried or fresh, they are very sweet, and their size allows you to eat more with less guilt. Dried cranberries, prunes and dates they travel easily and a 1/2 cup takes care of 1 serving of fruit for the day.
2. Fruit Preserves – real preserves, unlike jelly or jam, don’t have a lot of calories and count as a serving of fruit. (So that peanut butter and jelly sandwich actually has a serving of fruit in it!) I stir preserves into my greek yogurt and put them on top of whole grain bread all the time.
3. Apple Cider – I LOVE warm apple cider with mulling spice and a stick of cinnamon in the winter
4. Frozen fruit – I don’t like buying strawberries when they’re not in season. In the winter, I buy them frozen, and then put them in the fridge to thaw when I get home. I do the same thing with blueberries. Mangoes, peaches and pineapples are all great frozen treats too! They’re great in smoothies and topped with whip cream as a low-cal dessert!
5. Canned Mandarin oranges and Peaches – I don’t think everything you eat should come out of a can, but I love mandarin oranges in Light Syrup or Peaches in fruit juice. I’ll eat em straight out of the can, and all the water they’re in counts as a 1/2 a glass of water, helping me get to my 8 glasses for the day
6. Applesauce – A longtime kid’s lunchbox favorite, I’m actually not crazy about all those nutty flavors out now (pineapple-mango-applesauce?) But I love getting a jar of organic apple sauce and scooping some out in a cup and mixing it with vanilla extract, cinnamon and nutmeg. Yum!
7. Trader Joes “Flattened Bananas” - You know how it is, you put a fresh banana in your purse and at the end of the day it looks like it went 10 rounds with your Blackberry…and lost. Well Trader Joes has these dehydrated fruits called “Flattened bananas” and “Flattened Mangoes” and they’re a healthier version of those fruit rollups we used to have growing up. They are super portable, they have no added sugar or sulfuric acid and they’re bite size sized pieces of fruit that peel off and can be eaten anywhere.
8. 100% fruit juice - No Kool Aid doesn’t count. But Juicy Juice does. You should try to get most of your fruit from real fruit, but if you’re not getting any at ALL, those little juice boxes that the kids use are not a bad idea. If you buy a large container, remember you don’t need much. Just 8oz will get you a couple of servings right there. A fun thing I like to do is pour a 1/2cup of fruit juice into a large glass and fill the rest with Seltzer water. I still get the fruit, quench my thirst but I don’t add more than 100 calories. Just make sure the package or container of juice you buy says 100% juice. NOT juice from concentrate
9. Smoothies – I have a hard time eating anything cold in winter, but some people swear by this stuff. I suggest staying away from citrus smoothies in the winter. They will only make your body temperature cooler (That’s what they’re meant to so and why tropical fruits grow where it’s well….tropical). Stick to berries for now and mix them on they’re own or with yogurt, milk or juice.
10. Fruit Pops - Once again it’s a pretty cold thing to have in cold climates, but it’s another way to get some more fruit in your life. You can either buy the Dole “All Fruit” kind or make them yourself. Just get some popsickle sticks, and pour juice into small cups and put in the freezer, after about 30mins stick the popsickle sticks in so they’ll stand up. You can also buy fruit pop molds. There are some in the Kitchen Gadgets section of the Savvy Shop
What are some of the ways you sneak more fruit into your diet?
Savvy – add unflavored gelatin to the juice if you’re making frozen pops – it gives you a better texture pop and won’t drip so much!!
thanks! Is there a certain amount you use?
I dont know……..but experimetation can be fun!!

I definitely try many of these methods bc getting in my fruit is very important.
I always have Raisin Bran for breakfast and when I don’t I add raisins to my oatmeal (like you suggested)
