I’m still transitioning but so glad I made the decision to be natural. Natural hair offers so much variety style wise that it’s a win win decision. I get to have straight hair if I chose or culy/kinky hair without any chemical damage :)

    • Narazonia says:

Since as of today I am still transitioning but will be big chopping as of my b-day March 4th, I feel I can speak for myself only why it is good to be natural and chemical free. One of the top reasons to me other than the obvious that chemicals are bad for the scalp is that I will no longer have to depend on anyone or any chemicals to make me feel beautiful. This natural hair journey has taught me to start believing in my own abilities to take good care of my hair and love doing so. I feel it is a change being made today by many woman preparing future generations to see that what we were given at birth does not require chemical alterations and it is okay if we do not want to conform to what society feel is the only “look” that is acceptable. Also in using less chemicals, it may lessen the harm being done to the environment. All of the chemicals that are not being used have to get disposed of somehow, if they are not being used on our heads, some which are lableled FLAMABLE. So if we are not using the FLAMABLE substance in on our head than how will it be destroyed and what harm/affect will that do to our children, and childrens children lives as they get older I wonder. It may seem like a fashion statement, a movement, or as someone trying to be rebellious but really it is more than just that, natural hair means possibly saving our unborn seeds future. Keeping landfills and oceans clean from chemical substance.

    • A life without chemicals is a life of sheer BLISS…my hair is healthier, stronger, and dryness due to overcooking it with chemicals is no longer an issue. By choosing to go chemical free I have been able to achieve the beautiful hair that I love and get complements galore on especially now since I’m not a cookie cutter relaxed girl just like everyone else.

I choose to go natural back in 2008 while doing research and benefits of natural hair. I learned so much about hair and all fundamental differences. I appreciate my hair much more now than I ever did. I transitioned for 15 months and 2 weeks. I learned that my hair was becoming thinner over the years and I wanted my thick hair back. I know I’m color-treated, but I still consider myself a natural. My color isn’t harsh at all – and I have done very well with it for the past 10 years.

I got my BC on 2/20/10 and let me tell you that was the best feeling ever. I really mean it. I was apprehensive at first about the cutting and the unknown of it all, but once the relaxed hair was gone, I didn’t miss it one bit. I started off with BSL hair before my transition begin. No my longest strand is touch my shoulder.

Being natural gives you so much versatility. I don’t have to worry about getting my hair wet or being caught in the rain. I can do a wash-n-go and really go. I love my hair in it’s curly state. I love how easy it is to wash / co-wash. The feeling is truly amaziing. And I know there are a lot of misconceptions about natural hair. So many people just don’t understand and the first thing that comes to mind when you say “I’m going natural” is that your going to sport dreads or locs – that your your will be kinky all the time. That is so not true.

I know that I’ve only been a full natural for a short period of time, but I truly love it. My hair is fabulous and I get a whole lot of great compliments about my hair – and not all from the AA race.

Also I’m more viligent about the products I put in my hair. I’m still learning, but I read the ingriedients and try to steer clear of harmful thing, i.e., sulfates, cones, mineral oil, petroleum. I have’t used direct heat on my hair in almost two years (April). I’ve learned I don’t need it to accomplish sophisticated looking hair.

      Thank you.

I’ve been transitioning since September 2009. I plan to do the big chop in June. I don’t miss the chemicals at ALL and wondered why I didn’t do this years ago. I love feeling the new curls and can’t wait to see what my hair will look like when all of the relaxed ends are gone!

Taking care of my hair (products sans mineral oil, petroleum and parabans) has also lead to other transformations like diet, exercise and meditation. My next journey will be to eliminate the harsh chemicals used in my household cleaning arsenal. Thank you for providing some wonderful information on how to do that.

    • curlycurious says:

I am excited to start my new journey to natural hair.Having had my hair relaxed since before I can remember, it is truly a new beginning for me. I am excited to have healthy hair that I can wear either straight or curly whenever I want. Natural hair is so versatile and that is why I want to be natural. I am currently transitioning and plan on BC’ing in June of 2010….can’t wait! I have been transitioning for 18 months as of March 2010.

From what I’ve seen from stalking many natural forums, websites, blogs, and fotki’s, natural hair is more than just hair it is a way of life that leads you to a path of better living. Once you clear your hair from all the harsh chemicals, it’s as if you’ve cleared your mind and can start anew not only with healthy hair but a more open mind.

The benefits would be self esteem or confidence, able to walk in the rain, and a new type of understanding and freedom

    • Where do I begin? There are so many benefits to being natural, so this could be a very long comment :) I was never a fan of relaxing, and I would go sometimes 4 or 6 months between them because I hated the process so much. Not because I hated the chemicals (that aversion didn’t come until later), but because I was just lazy with my hair. But eventually, my desire to live a chemical-free lifestyle is what led me to take the natural plunge, and I’ll never look back. I realized after going natural that the only reason it took so much time to corrall my hair is that I was trying to make it do things it wasn’t meant for. Now that I’m curly, I can literally get up in the morning, spray a little water/conditioner mix or rub in some olive or coconut oil, fluff and go. Easy peasy. And I feel like I’m finally the woman I was meant to be.

I must say that Ihave just about every hairstyle except a jerri curl (whew thank goodness I missed that one, I wouldn’t be able to stand te flash back photos that could pop up on facebook) And the one I like best is natural. The versatility was amazing. I’d twist it one week, have it blown striaght the next, and on Friday pick it out into an Angela Davis afro. No while your versatility will depend on length and texture two things remain the same for all natural heads… mostuirizer and a comb…. make them your bestest friends…

    • Evena says:

I love the versatility of my curly kinks and I notice that my hair grows rapidly then when my hair was relax.

    • jessica says:

what I really like about having to wear my hair in it’s natural state is that, there’s no fear in walking in the rain :) also i like to be different…u know, be my own self. I am a very shy person and also have anxiety issues, but i sense a feeling of confidence. Wearing the TWA is fun..(who would have thought)…..now the remaining 3 ladies in my family(nuclear) are all wearing their hair natural. And did I mention that wearing my hair natural has empowered me even spiritually….yes.

    • Sia says:

The biggest benefit to wearing your hair natural and free of chemicals is that it is one of the first steps that you will take to reclaiming your health and your body. Society dictates, from the time that we are born, how we should wear our hair, what “foods” are good for you, what additives are OK, which styles are acceptable, etc. Once you go natural you open your eyes to the notion that you DON’T have to wear your hair a certain way, or that you hair is not hard to manage, or that you don’t have to shampoo your hair, or that you don’t have to slather caustic chemicals on your scalp to get your hair to “behave”. Going natural is the first step to realizing that there are sooo many options out there for you that will not compromise your health and that you have every right to make your OWN decisions about your life!

Love the blog :-) Very inspirational!

    • Curlykey says:

I love using all natural products when possible. There are so many options out there for natural products. I’m learning more and more of the benefits of using more natural products. Your blog is very informative. I would love to win the Kinky Curly products!

    • The biggest benefit of wearing my hair natural and chemical free is that after years of being relaxed I have finally been able to get control of my eczema. My skin especially on my scalp, face and neck was very dry, tender, red, flaky and itchy and after i let go of the lye my skin got worse…but then it started to get better and better and better.

      Great blog btw.

    • Valerie says:

My reason for becoming natural stems from a scalp condtion that I have called seborrheic dermatitis it causes a crust to form on the scalp, redness, hair loss and an itchy scalp. It has been the worse conditon I have ever had and nothing every worked until I went natural over a year ago I did the big chop, I didn’t care about the hair loss because I knew it would grow back. I changed the products that I use…natural products and I limit the use of oils. I also use Kinky Curly Custard to where my wash and go’s. I like the way my hair looks…hair loss and all. Its healthy even though I have to limit what my hair and scalp can stand. I love being natural its the best thing I could have done….regradless of my condition.

    • Kisha says:

I love this website! I have been chemical free for the past 8 years and have loved every minute of it but have found that curly hair can be very difficult to manage if you are not using the correct products. I am looking forward to trying this new Kinky Curly products and promote it to other women sporting the natural look. Great site and if possible post photos of before and after using the products:)

    • Shahidah says:

I have been transitioning into my holistic way of living lifestyle for about a year now. I am letting my relaxer grow out. I am using natural cleaning products, vinegar has become my best friend. lol I have 3 daughters under 7, and they are my inspiration for making healthier choices in my life. This website is great. Keep the good info coming! :-)

    • Yvette says:

As someone who’s been natural for almost 6 yrs (no chemicals), I have found that my hair is fuller. However, I’ve been using heat and making the decision to go natural reassures me that I will have healthier hair. And I can do so much more, in terms of styling. In a sense, I’m newly completely “natural” and can’t wait for what is to come!
