Natural hair to me means more time with my husband. He was getting ready to deploy and I was just spending so much time in the salon. It was ridiculous. We were trying to save money and time was so precious I just decided to go for it. Two years later it’s the best choice I ever made. I love the freedom of being able to come and go as I choose and not being afraid of the rain. Not to mention my husband loves it as well!

    • tiffytaffey says:

Natural hair allows me the not be consumed on what the world thinks, likes, or deems acceptable……..I can focus on who I am, my place in this world, and the NATURAL beauty that God gave me.

    • Tiffany B says:

Oh wow, there are so many benefits. I guess in a more general sense, not putting harmful chemicals on my head, not having to deal with the itching/burning, and not having hair like the majority of black women. On a more personal level, going natural has forced me to learn how to take care of my own hair, as well as confront my own, and my family’s own, prejudices. I always assumed that I and my family were open and accepting, not realizing that this was only because non of us significantly deviated from a pretty straight and narrow path. Now I’m noticing so many problematic things, and I’m really learning to confront and deal with them. And, for the first time in my life, I love my hair :)

    • Ms. Bar B says:

Cool. I haven’t had the opportunity to try these products yet, but I have been wanting to. The results that can be achieved with them are amazing!

The benefits of wearing hair that is natural and free of chemicals are many. Chemicals damage our hair in the way of over-processing and can cause irritation and burning on the scalp. I also feel like natural hair is a lot more versatile than relaxed hair. To be able to work with a natural texture, to create texture using different twisting and braiding techniques and even to be able to straighten using a flat iron if so desired.

My biggest benefit of being natural is being able to be a literal hair role model for my 6 year old daughter. My days in the salon made her wish for straight hair. By making the decision to go natural, I can practice what I have been preaching to her about the beauty of natural hair. We have a lot of fun with it.

    • Ms. Bar B says:

Became a fan of Savvy Brown on Facebook and started following on Networked Blogs!

    • Janay F. says:

My personal benefit for keeping my hair chemical free is that my hair and scalp love me for it. In my 23 years I have had two texturizers–both of which left me with scabs on my poor scalp and redness to boot. And that is NOT cute!!!! And my hair? Half of it what over processed, the other part completely rejected it!!! The whole “loosen the curl” speech from my stylist was a lye (pun intended).

On another note, I love that with natural hair no curl pattern is exactly the same. Relaxed hair looks the same after a while on everyone. It amazes me that my twist out looks so different that a fellow curly’s who used the exact same product and done the same day. I adore the authenticity of my kinks and appreciate the coils of others. To me, there’s nothing better =).

    • KC says:

Currently, I’m trasitioning and the benefit for me is accepting my natural hair for all its kinky glory and restoring the health to my hair.

    • R says:

Since going natural after a lifetime of “long, pretty, (permed) hair”, I have never in my life felt more comfortable in my own skin! Among the many benefits, my confidence has (unexpectedly) been boosted!

    • Angel Peters says:

Being natural is a blessing! No longer do I have to conform to society’s narrow minded standards of beauty. I don’t to run from rain or humidity. I feel liberated, and I have been able to spread the good word to others. My hair is healthy, and has gotten much thicker since going natural. I am not afriad to be versitale, and I am not afraid to be natural!

    • Sharina says:

Being natural means I know exactly what is going on and in my body. Being natural isn’t just a thing to do for the moment for me. It’s a lifestyle for me in every sense of the word. Our community is plagued with so many diseases and ailments and I’m a firm believer that it has a lot to do with the chemicals that we use on our bodies and put in our bodies. If it were up to me relaxers would be outlawed lol. We are so beautifully unique the way the most high created us and we should be proud to be beautifully natural. Why fix what isn’t broken?

Being natural means less risk of developing some yet to be named disease created by the harmful chemicals in relaxers. It means more time to spend with my family. It means I can raise healthy and informed children who will understand the importance of loving yourself exactly the way you are.

As a mother to a beautiful 7 month old baby boy I understand the importance of taking care of myself. I also understand the importance of taking care of him. He has been exclusively breastfed since he was born and will continue to be. We also use cloth diapers as a means of not only helping the environment but also helping our wallet. It’s our way of being savvy brown frugal parents :)

    • Afrochyck says:

Natural hair means less time in the morning spent grooming. My TWA and fly earrings means I stand out in the crowd. All eyes are on me. (And I’m loving that)

    • Naturalhonney says:

Natural hair to me means that I have come to fully love and accept myself as God my Creator intended me to be! That I am wonderfully made Kinky hair and all! It means I no longer make decisions about my hair based on the conception of others, their likes and dislikes. I would often think back to when I was a little girl and try to remember what my natural hair was like and I couldn’t do it, I for the life of me I could NOT remember the texture of my natural tresses so I had to ask my mom to give me a description of my hair! That is when I realized I wanted to rediscover what I denied.

On a superficial level it means no more running in from the rain or spending hrs in a salon spending money I didn’t have just to conform to the “norm” I was SICK and TIRED of waiting 2hrs just to be called to the chair! Most importantly being natural allows me to show the little girls and young women that its okay to be different because believe me they are watching. Being natural allows me to lead by example and I love it!! I love the fact that I go into the store and the girl who is also natural gawks at my hair, MY HAIR! Who knows maybe she was going to give up on this thing called NAPPY HAIR and I came along and inspired her to not turn her back on her kinks. Natural hair to me means Isoke(ee-SOH-kah) which means A Satisfying gift from God in Swahili.

    • Erin says:

The main benefit i get from wearing my hair natural and free of chemicals is simply freedom. The freedom from harmful chemicals, the freedom to be myself and wear my hair how its supposed to be and most importantly freedom from the shackles of these european ideals and misconceptions. By wearing my hair natural and proud I give my mother an sister that extra push to continue their own transitions to natural.

    • Lynnieluve says:

I didn’t realize how much hair dictated plan in my everyday life until I started transitioning. One benefit of wearing my hair natural and chemical free is being free. There is so much freedom in being natural. I use to watch the weather all the time and determine what I would do to my hair accordingly. Now I watch the weather to see how I need to dress instead.

    • mese says:

Having natural hair allows me to have more time with my family. I recently started going back to school and I need all the free time I can get. Natural hair has liberated me from long hours at the hair salon. My permed hair was always trying to curl back up. Living in an area with high humidity I was constantly affected by the weather.

    • Myrlyn V. says:

There are so many benefits! The confidence, loving yourself on a deeper level, chemical-free hair and being more educated are linked to natural hair. Confidence reaches an all new high when a woman decides to become natural. There’s nothing better than telling the world “I am who I am and I am proud of myself”. With damaged hair, there’s a tendency to feel drab at times. Natural hair gets rid of the negative and embraces the positive energy within a person. Confidence is linked to personal love in that a deeper love is brought out in a woman when she decides to go natural. She really does embrace all of herself and completely loves every flaw and perfection that she has in herself. Transitioning now, I fall more in love with my new growth. I’ve really learned to evaluate my life more spiritually and mentally and I know there are many other women out there who have done the same. Chemical free is the way to be. Some of the chemicals used in products for hair are known to lead to long-term dangers. Why would anyone want to put a harmful chemical on their hair, especially the scalp which is very sensitive? When learning about these chemicals, I learned so much that I thought I knew or never knew before. I used to think mineral oil was good for hair because it was in every product. Imagine, I would never have thought that mineral oil was the one main product clogging pores and preventing my hair from growing properly. Now that I learned so much about hair, I never hesitate to tell people about it. There’s still a lot that I need to learn and it’s beneficial to all women going natural to spread their suggestions and knowledge.

    • Kat says:

Being natural for me has opened me up to a whole new world. I not only have been extra careful about what ingredients I put in my hair, I also have taken the time to get to know my hair better than ever before. I know what ingredients my hair likes and dislike, and am still learning all the new styles I can do with it. I am also more confident. Despite the occasional comments about my wild hair, I have never been more comfortable with the way my hair looks.
Being more conscious about what products I put in my hair has also made me more aware about the things I put in my body and on my skin. I have been making an effort to become more natural in every aspect of life. I eat healthier and use only natural soaps and lotions. I love my natural hair, and it may have just turned me into a modern day hippie, lol!

    • Alaina says:

The benefits of wearing my hair natural and free are so many! But my favorites are that I no longer have to deal with burning stuff on my head, or waiting forever for a stylist to decide when she wants to a serve me and charge me too much! i love being in control of my hair and learning to love myself :)

    • HappyNappyHomeMakerMama says:

This is a journey I’ve always wanted to embark upon. And now that I have and to know that I know there are communities out there that support and help steer this path I am on I love it even more. Wearing my hair in it’s natural-ness has boosted my self esteem, educated me on what my hair can do and allows me to better control blemishes on my skin….that natural products I now use on my hair don’t irritate my skin as much as my former products did. I can tell a difference inside and out!!! Exercise is welcomed It’s my look now to be free and not controlled by a hair style.

This website has change the way of take care of myself and my family. Thank you!

    • Keisha says:

Natural hair means that my children can know what it means to be naturally beautiful and know that nothing is wrong with the way they look. I felt like a lot of women (myself included previously) would tell our kids that they are beautiful the way they are without following the same standard. I also feel that before, I wasn’t accepting myself for who I really was.

    • nikkinixnicole says:

There are too many benefits! Here are a few:
      - no more saturdays at ronda’s waiting 6 hrs to get your scalp burned and your kinky-curly hair altered to something that society has taught you is acceptable (i’m not bitter LOL)
      - learning self-acceptance, in spite of criticism
      - rain doesn’t ruin your entire day
      - versality with styling as opposed to straight, straight, and more straight
      - no more burning scalp followed by scabs and hair loss
      - the option of washing my hair as much as i want
      - wash-n-gos!

    • DebE says:

After having my natural hair texture chemical relaxed for 45 years, I can say that being chemical free has benefited my hair and my lifestyle. My mom relaxed my hair at the young age of 4. I had very thick hair as a little girl, and over the years my hair became thin and very fragile.

When I decided to go natural at my age everyone thought that I was going through the “change.” lol Nevertheless…my decision to go natural started with altering my own thought process as to how I would embrace MYSELF!

Now that I no longer relax my hair; I can see a vast improvement in every strand of hair on my head. As I become more cognizant of what I am using on my hair; I have become more cognizant of my health and how what I do (inside and out) impacts my mind, body and soul.

The biggest benefit of wearing my hair natural and being completely chemical free is the positive change in my thought process as it relates to my hair, my health and my entire outlook on life!!!

    • Brandiss says:

Wearing my hair natural allows me to be FREE.
It teaches me patience and love.
It also shows the world that I am [finally] comfortable in my own skin.
      I can be me unapologetically.

    • Angel says:

Natural hair allows me to discover my own inner and outer beauty. It has helped me to find myself, to define myself and discover how unique we really are as a person. It has helped me to love myself more. And, natural hair is beautiful hair. Those women who embrace their natural hair look like queens and princesses to me. I only wish I had discovered this way of life in my 20s, how much healthier me and my hair would be.

    • I think the benefits of wearing natural hair and being chemical free is the versatility! I can rock a puff, an afro, twist out or two strand twist without having to worry about straight ends and limp curls. I am a newly natural diva, but I am more and more appreciative of it EVERY SINGLE DAY!!!

    • Ruth says:

Hi there! I’ve been natural for most of my life, but I’m only just learning to care for my own hair. It used to be that I would have to sit for hours for someone else to do tiny plaits or twists in my hair… after they had ‘properly’ smothered it in petroleum-based products and blow dried it into submission. :-O I would keep them in for as long as I could without being frumpy just because I did not want to deal with my hair!

I finally came to realise, however, that it was time for my vegetarian lifestyle to extend to my hair and scalp and I researched, found some really lovely ‘green’ and natural blogs (including this one), and experimented, experimented, experimented… and then some!

So today – with newly acquired perspective, mixtress status and hair growth to boot – I can say that the benefits of wearing my hair natural are:
      1. Healthier scalp and strands.
      2. Total control over what touches my scalp, and what styles I rock.
      3. My hair can look long or short… without getting a cut. Shrinkage is the bomb!
      4. For the FIRST time in my life…. My hair is GROWING!

That got lengthy in a hurry… Sorry! :)

    • Yoli says:

I love my natural hair texture… I have long locs now… and have been debating taking them out!!! but overall love that it grows so quickly now, that I don;t have to do any extra chemical work to make it look a certain way. I even love “natural hair wigs” lol

      Just get up and go!

    • Roscheeta says:

The main benefit I recieve from wearing my hair natural and chemical free is the healing of my scalp and the regrowth of my hair. This also includes the renewing of my mind about beauty and self image. I am accepting and learning to love and appreciat what God has given me.

    • BJP says:

The biggest benefit of living with natural hair is limiting our exposure to the chemicals found in relaxers. Another benefit is breaking the dependency on stylists. Financially, time-wise, and psychologically this is a good thing for me and let’s face it it’s simply more sustainable.

I did a big chop in 15 years but didn’t have nearly the knowledge I have now. Right now I’m transitioning myself and my two daughters from relaxers to natural hair and am enjoying the journey. Though I haven’t mustered up the courage for another big chop this go round, I’ve been relaxer-free since July and have a sew-in for now.

    • CC says:

      Hi there,
Just came across your blog and love it! I have been organic foodie for a few years now but only one friend has gotten on board with me. Everyone else just doesn’t get it with all of the pesticides, growth hormones, and preservatives in the foods. It sure is a bit more expensive so I’m looking forward to learning some budget-friendly tips from you! :) I have not explored beauty products yet, such as make-up and lipsticks so very interested in all of that as well!

Hope I win the contest, I have wanted to try these products, just gave up the Miss Jessie’s! :)

    • lexibugg004 says:

the benefits of being natural are that i no longer have to fight my hair, i now understand it, i no longer feel fake because i am my authentic self, i don’t need to compare myself to others, because i have my own unique God given beauty. i feel that i am on my way to being complete, because i am accepting a part of my self that is one of the most beautiful, and has be oppressed unnecessarily for far too long, and it is soooo easy to just shake out m twist out and go!!! my husband love playing in my hair!!! he says it feels like cashmere and he just want to crawl in it and fall asleep!!!

    • Lorrett says:

Wearing my hair natural simply allows me to be who God created me to be. It teaches me to love myself the way He has made me because I realized that he obviously made me this way and kept me this way because He thought I was a beautiful creation. Another benefit is not having to worry about burns and damage from chemicals like relaxers and flat ironing. Straight hair is only an option. My hair has grown faster than when I used harsh chemicals.

    • Savvy says:

Ladies these comments are so wonderfull! Some of them have moved me to tears! Please take a moment and read each other’s statements, and then if you know of someone who is on the fence about becoming natural, HAVE THEM READ THESE COMMENTS! Thank you so much!

My hair is thicker, retains length and looks healthier than my relaxed hair. I have also learned to love my hair which has lead me to feel better about myself. I am now capable of taking care of my own hair and I don’t have to rely on anyone else.

    • Elle says:

Well, obviously there are a ton! My favorite – no more burning my scalp! Man, that hurt… Oh, and not having to worry about my hair getting frizzy or the curl falling out when it gets really humid or it’s raining. My natural hair hearts water!

    • Candi Girl says:

Wearing my hair natural has helped to alleviate some of the scalp issues that I have. My scalp feels less dry and doesn’t itch as much. Also, I save time that I used to spend sitting in the salon for hours and hours, and I save money because I do just about everything myself now.

awesome giveaway. being natural and chemical free has been an amazing personal journey for me..i, like many other womyn of color have been exposed to so many hair products that are mentally and physically harmful…products we may have willingly and unwillingly used/abused.

i’m so happy that through my work around racism, sexism and other types of oppressions i was able to connect with myself and others in deeper ways. being natural and chemical free is my private and public revolutionary act..it’s what i want for my six year old daughter, my curly headed nieces and all curly, kinky, coiled up black and brown babies. it’s the truth and an ancestral obligation and right.

      Thanks so much.

    • ChrsLvsBks says:

Less than a year ago, I learned how to care for my curls. OMGoodness, I loved reading about products to help moisturize my curls. I am addicted to finding and using natural hair care products. I have also made a few products to use on my hair.

I love experimenting with new styles. Natural hair allows me to wear so many different styles. You can find me rocking twists, twist outs, braids, WnGs, buns and the list goes on and on.

Basically, natural hair is my passion!

    • regina says:

I wear natural hair because it’s a way to prevent unnecessary toxins [i.e., sodium hydroxide found in relaxers] from entering my body. In 2010, it’s time to do a new thing. ;->

    • The benefit of wearing my hair natural and free of chemical is the fact that is it finally thick and health again.

My hair was so lifeless after 20+ years of chemical abuse.

Going natural also made me open my eyes to other healthy life changes including the way that I eat and the products that I use on my face and body.

      ~Kinky Rhonnie @kinkyrhonnie.blogspot.com

    • I never had issues with hair growth/breakage due to relaxers. What made me deceide to go natural was seeing my close friends’ different textures. I kept encouraging them against getting relaxers because of how they could wear a variety of styles, and not permantly alter their hair and I was altering mine.
It was time to pratice what I was preaching. I starting transitioning in the time before I left for the Peace Corps. I wish I had gone natural sooner!

Natural and chemical free is awesome because:
-You can always go curly to straight but never relaxer to curly. There’s such a variety of styles for a curly/coily head!
-Its a great convo starter wih other curlies/coilies.
-It takes more time to do my hair but its my time, not paid salon time. And I can multi-task by watching movies or chatting with friends (and explaning what/why I’m doing what I’m doing :-)
-I love learning about different ways to use foods and other products and how natural products benefit the skin and hair.
-Naural hair is something unique and special. It acts, looks and responds differently to everything, just as a person does. There are some similarities but no curl/coil is exactly the same. I am more partial to curly/coily hair of all forms. I just think its more beautiful and gives a person’s face more character, makes them that more unique.

Everday, I thinking outside the box what to put on my hair; different ways to style it; hair accesories and jewerly to accent it. I’ve never been low of self-esteem but wearing my hair the way it grows from my head makes me feel stronger, more beautiful and a trend setter of sorts. Once I walk out of the house, I’m going against the mainstream but towards a whole, grounded me.

    • Chrissystina says:

“Never had a perm or relaxer
      I’ve multiplied the factor
      Natural hair is eternally beautiful
Before and after” – Christina Mason

Natural hair is not for the faint of heart. We are charged with combicide, killing the fine-toothed and plastic hearted. We are charged with being too bold, too Black, too everything that comes so naturally.

But fools who do not know, miss out on what is naturally golden and divine. Out hair grows, defies gravity, grabs compliments and takes no prisoners.

I love my natural hair because I am aesthetically unique, even without makeup or a dress ripped from the runway. Curls are my vintage couture, one-of-a-kind.

    • Monadee says:

Nature chemical free hair is the way to go for women for a number of reasons. While you will have to invest time in taking care of your mane you will no longer loose a lot of time in salons and you may also save money in the end. For those with medical conditions I believe that natural hair truly is the way to go. Medical conditions can cause so many underlying problems for the hair and scalp. As someone transitioning *8th month I can really see a difference in the condition of my scalp and in the growth of my hair.

Natural is more than a journey, it is a lifestyle. Something you develop. At first you may want the curls or the length, but instead of focusing on the goals, take notice of the process and what you can gain while trying to reach your goals. Like everyone else going natural was the best thing for my hair and it has taught me more patience and has educated me way more about hair and how it OUGHT to be cared for.

P.S. your website is very informative and creative.

    • sheazy says:

I LOVE the versatility of my natural hair. I use to be natural from birth up to age 12, and i got a perm just because i thought that is what you do when you get older. My hair use to be full thick and fun as a kid and i am rediscovering all those great attributes along with a better understanding of what i put into it. My hair has been flourishing without chemicals and more natural hair care. I can be straight curly, wavy whenever i want. My hair can match my mood and there are endless possibilities of what i can do with it.
