New Simple Protective Style: The Twisty Bun

Posted in Hair, Hair Archive, Hair Tips | Friday, April 23rd, 2010

twist bun thumb

I saw Kimmaytube of YouTube and Luv Naturals demonstrate this one, and I’ve added it to my repertoire. After my washing my hair and following my normal routine, I usually put my hair in medium-sized twists like this.

I rarely use a dryer, opting instead to use a microfiber towel to squeeze dry my hair before I twist, and then let it air dry the rest of the way. I’m convinced I’ve been able to retain more length this way. BUT what to do if I have to go out or to a function the same day that I’ve washed my hair? Kimmaytube to the rescue!

I took the twists and put them in a medium banana locking comb like this one horizontally. (Kimmay uses a large banana clip, but her hair is longer than mine.)

Then I used bobby pins to tuck the twists under. I hid the pins under the bottom of the banana clip. Then I put on a headband to secure the shorter twists in front. Voila! Instant hairstyle.

The great thing about this style is that I wore it for 2 or 3 days and then took it down and wore my hair in a twistout.  Because the twists stayed in so long, my twistout was really defined!

BananaClip $6.00

Headband .50

Two hairstyles in one week without re-twisting?   PRICELESS.

For detailed instructions on how to achieve the above bun style check out Kimmaytube’s instructions here.

Too cool! I’ve been looking for more protective styles. Silly question: Where did you get your banana comb from?

    • Savvy says:

You can get one in the Savvy Shop here. For now there are two size and they’re great for thick hair like mine. If your hair is longer than mine you can use these.

It’s been all about the updo hairstyles for me and I love this.

    • Savvy says:

@ChrsLvsBks Thanks! Since your hair is longer than mine, the larger banana clip would probably work well!

    • Savvy says:

@Shak try it1 I’d love to see pics

Gorgeous. I will try this eventually!

Im going to try this on my daughter.. Will this work if your transitioning?

    • Savvy says:

Absolutely! It will work on ay hair type. If you’re hair is straight, then you might need to use more pins…

I love this hairstyle. Can it also work for shorter hair? With a length check it seems as if my hair is about nape length. Also, I’ve been watching kimmaytube’s videos and am loving them. I’ve tried her conditioner with kinky kurly knot today and had to substitute in some oils since I didn’t have castor oil or aloe vera juice. Nonetheless, it works wonderfully and I plan to get the products I need to see how that affects my hair (since this was centered around getting the proper pH that goes with hair). Actually, all her videos have been great, especially her fashion shows :)
