How to Wash and Dry Your Hair in an Hour

shower

Yes, you read that right.

I’ve seen some great hair routines since I started checking out different sites, blogs and YouTube videos. Some of them just take so long to complete though! And I’ve done the 4-6 hour weekend-hair-washing-deep-conditioning-twisting-rolling-sessions.

BUT

I’m always looking for ways to shorten my routine, so I came up with what I call the “Mid-Week Quickwash”. This is great for when I’ve messed up a hairstyle, or I’ve tried a new product that didn’t work, there’s too much product in my hair, or my scalp just really needs a wash. This routine does NOT include a deep conditioning treatment. If you want to add one to this routine, no problem. (It’ll just take you longer than an hour).
Let’s go!

- I wash my hair following my regular routine and then after I rinse, I add a dollop of Giovanni’s Smooth As Silk conditioner to my hair one section at a time and detangle with my shower comb as I go. I clip back each section with my trusty metal duckbill clips as I go (the ones without the teeth). After my whole head is full of conditioner, I leave it in for another couple of minutes while I wash up and then I rinse out the conditioner with cool water.  (20mins)

- I step out of the shower, and immediately grab my big microfiber towel and begin squeezing the water out of my hair. This is KEY. Microfiber towels are great because they absorb so much water. The towels usually have two different “naps” one side thick and the other fine. I feel that the thicker nap side works best for me. Go figure. (10mins)

- I then section my hair into 4 parts, and spray each section with my Daily Leave-In Conditioner. Then I add a healthy amount of a creamy leave-in conditioner to each section. The leave-in I used here is a mixture of Aubrey Organics Honeysuckle Rose Conditioner (AOHSR) mixed with Karen’s Body Beautiful Hair Milk. (15mins)

-Then I grab either a cut stocking, or my Scunci no damage headband (they’re like $2.99 at the drugstore) to pull my hair up into a puff.My hair is damp but not dripping at this point, thanks to the towel. (5mins)

cut stocking (great for ponytails and headbands!)

Scunci (smaller than a headband, but bigger than a ponytail holder)

(You’re not trying to give yourself a facelift here, you’re just trying to get your hair back into a nice fluffy puff!)

Then I dip my fingers in my clear EcoStyler Gel and dab the at the edges of my hair all around my head. Next, I take my small boar bristle brush and brush the gel through my hair. I take another dab of gel and rub it in my hands and pull at the ends of my hair that are up in the puff.  I then take a silk or satin scarf and wrap it around my edges. (10 mins)

Done.

When I take the scarf off either when I get up in the morning, or when I’m on my way out the door. It looks like THIS.

the scarf I wrapped around my edges helps with the waves!

The great thing about this routine, is that even if you have a different hair texture than I have, it still works and you’re NOT using heat to dry your hair. This is also a great style if you workout a lot. The puff helps to stretch your curls a bit, so the next day you can easily do a twistout if you want. (I’ll show you how I do mine next week).

* this works well for me, because AOHSR is crazy thick, and KBB Hair Milk tends to be a little to thin for me. Mixed together,  they’re just right!

I especially love the bit about using the microfiber towel. I just never thought of that. I do have a microfiber turbie-twist that I use a lot. I never heat-dry my hair anymore, but still do plenty of other heat damage!

I LOVE microfiber. If it came by the yard I’d buy a bolt of it I swear! I’ve never used a turbie-twist, where did you get it? Was it expensive? I stayed under the dryer too long and I really did a number on my scalp at one point last year, so I’m trying to go heat-free as much as I can manage. But it takes planing.

This sounds like a really great method and will definitely try it. I often find myself with that “what am I going to do with this hair” feeling in the middle of the week. Where can I get the microfiber towels? I also find it really cool that I get to see your blog from nearly new. Good Luck! I’ll read daily through iGoogle!

Thanks so much! Just click on “microfiber towels” in the post and it will take you right to the Savvy Shop where you can buy them.

    • [...] This style is achieved by separating the hair into sections and then taking each section and separating those into two and twisting them together. Then setting the twists on rollers. After a few hours, the twists are then separated, and can be worn as is, or, can be fluffed and separated more to add more volume. There are a hundred different variations on this style, but this is a basic one that I have in my arsenal. I’m going to show you how I do mine when my hair is dry. This is how I did my dry twistout after wearing it in a quick puff I made in the post How to Wash and Dry Your Hair in 1 Hour. [...]
