I first heard about Chatto’s  products (pronounced Sha-toe), when a fan of her products contacted me and told me that I should try them. (Thanks Julie!) Ms. Chatto then contacted me herself and sent me quite a few of her products. You know how I like to thoroughly review products, so I’m going to spread this over a few posts. Chatto is based in Chicago, and the products can be ordered online. These products are definitely geared towards people with with 3b,3c,4a,4b,4c type curly hair. For more on hair typing, click here.

Here’s my review of five of Chatto’s products:

Chatto’s Shampoo Bar for Twists and Locs $12.00 + shipping
Ingredients: Sunflower, Palm, Coconut, and Castor oils; Silk Protein;  Shea Butter,Horse Tail , hops,Olive oil, Aloe Vera, Yarrow, Essential oils Argan oil Peppermint, Rosemary, Sweet Orange, Tangerine, Pink Grapefruit, Tea Tree.

Despite the name, this bar can be used on all types up hair. The shampoo bar is a nice size and so I cut it up just like the one I got from Anita Grant. I cleaned my hair in sections following my normal routine. A small piece lathered up a lot and cleaned my hair and scalp really well. You can also use this bar on your body and Chatto states that it is also good for anyone with Eczema. You can purchase this product here.
RATING*: 4 Smart - Good product, will buy again, but it would be great if it was $10 or less

Chatto’s Purely Organics Earth and Beyond Coconut-Shea Deep Penetrating Conditioner 6.5 oz. $18.50 +shipping
Ingredients: Purified water, Aloe Vera, Organic Shea Butter, Coconut, Argan Oil, Castor Oil, Jojoba Oil, Horsetail, Bladderwack, Burdock, Yarrow, Cinnamon, Pure therapeutic grade essential oil blend: lavender, rosemary, sage, hops, bergamot, ylang ylang, sweet orange, geranium, cedar wood, spanish marjoram, keratin, cinnamon, vitamin A, Vitamin B6, Vitamin E

This is one of ONLY TWO conditioners that Chatto sells that is cone-free, paraben-free, and sulfate free.* It really is a good product, and had great slip! My hair felt soft and moisturized and detangled easily with my shower comb. The only thing is it took a half-bottle to achieve this effect, and it has a strong perfume-like scent. You can purchase this product here.
RATING*: 3 Suitable – Great product, but I just can’t justify paying $18.50 + $8 shipping and handling for 6oz. of product

Chatto’s Purely Organics 6-Plus Growth Leave-In conditioner 60z. $16.50Ingredients: Water, Aloe Vera, Shea Butter, Argan Oil, Glycerine, Coconut Oil, Castor Oil, Jojoba Oil, Arctrium Lappa Root Extract, Chamomile, Sage, Rosemary, Peppermint, Nettle, Horsetail, Keratin, Green Tea, Wild Cherry, Aloe Bardensis Leaf Extract, Goldenseal, Rose, cinnamon, Vitamin A, Vitamin B6, Vitamin E.

This is the ONLY paraben-free, sulfate-free, cone-free leave-in conditioner that Chatto carries. I applied a dime-sized amount to my wet hair section-by-section after rinsing out the Purely Organics Earth and Beyond Coconut-Shea Deep Penetrating Conditioner, and before I raked in her Twist and Grow Loc Gel. This conditioner definitely kept my hair soft and moisturized well without any hold. You can purchase this product here.
RATING*: 3 Suitable – A descent product, but 6oz. is just to small an amount to pay $16.50 + $8 shipping

Chatto’s Twist and Grow Loc Gel 2oz. $5.00+shipping
Ingredients: Shea butter, Vitamins A & E, Natural Oils.

The consistency of this gel is thin like lotion, so I was a bit skeptical as to how well it would hold. I was pleasantly surprised! I raked a dollop of gel through my hair with my fingers one section at a time and then two-strand twisted my hair into medium-sized twists. The twists had hold and my twistout stayed defined for days! You can purchase this product here.
RATING*: 4 – Great product, will buy again I just wish you got more than 2oz for the price.

Chatto’s Nature’s Natural Omega Gold Shea Protein and Vitamin Scalp Conditioner 4oz. $18.00+shipping
Ingredients: Shea Butter, Argan Oil, Flax Seed Oil, Olive Oil, Omega 3. Horsetail, Nettle, Vitamins A, C, and E and Essential Oils.

I’ve been hearing a lot about Argan Oil a lot and so I was very curious about this product. It feels like grainy shea butter but emulsified easily in my hands. I used it to seal my twists and along the edges of my scalp. This product definitely has hold, and because of the oils a little goes a long way. My hair was REALLY shiny and super defined after using this stuff. It also has a strong fragrance though. You can purchase this product here.
RATING*: 3 Suitable – Again, a decent product, but again $18 + $8 shipping is too much for me.

RESULTS!

twistout day 1

twistout... 3 days later!

I was impressed that the  twistout lasted as long as it did without any retwisting! Overall the products worked great! I just wish that they were more affordable.
