For those of you who are new to the celebration checkout What Is Earth Day?. It really is more than just recycling. This year, I’ve decided to actually start composting, and growing even more veggies in my garden, like I did last year. I’ll be blogging about it as soon as I get my bin!

I NEVER thought that this lil blog about my crazy journey to be a little healthier, greener and richer would be as successful as it has become. Thank you so much to all of you who have supportd the blog (and me) and who have commented, emailed, Facebooked, Tweeted and talked up this little project. the first year was a bit overwhelming for me, but I’m SO ESSITED about what’s in store for 2011.

Karen’s Body Beautiful Hair Milk (Sweet Ambrosia) Review

After hearing about this product and taking a trip to Karen’s Body Beautiful’s store in Brooklyn, NY and WATCHING them make it. I decided to try it.

Karen’s Body Beautiful Hair Milk (Sweet Ambrosia)* $16

Ingredients: Purified Water, Jojoba and Avocado Oils, Vegetable Wax, Panthenol, Arnica, Calendula, Echinacea, Nettle & Horsetail Extracts, Vegetable Glycerin, Wheat Germ Oil, Essential and/or Fragrance Oil, Natural Enzymes & Vitamin E

I’m a big fan of these all-natural ingredients, and I’m an even bigger fan of what this stuff does to my hair! I find that this product works best on dry hair. It is the same consistency as conditioner or lotion and it works really well to moisturize my hair and make it nice and shiny. I like how it makes my twistouts look nice and full, and how my puffs stay nice and soft. . (It does not, however, provide much hold, so you need to use some type of gel for that). The great thing about this product is that a little goes a long way, which helps make the price fit your budget better. You can also choose from 12 distinctive scents. (My favorite is the Coco Lime).

Eco-Friendly Watches from Eco Wrist!

Eco Wrist is a company that makes eco-friendly, sustainable wrist wear for men and women. I had the pleasure of meeting the owners (and husband and wife) David Gandy and MarQuerite Hamden at a street fair here in Brooklyn last month, where Sexy and I bought our new watches! (Check them out below.)

Here’s the scoop.

All of their watches are derived from all-natural sustainable materials. The material include bamboo, tagua nuts, acheera seeds, coconut, wood, cow’s leather and reed. Other woods used are teak, brittlebush, granadilla tree wood and macana tree wood. The majority of the materials used to make the timepieces are from South American farms, and are harvested in a sustainable manner. The wristbands are made of leather local to the Amazon region. They even created a unique way of securing the watch to your wrist eliminating the need for metal clasps, using less materials as well.

The company itself is sustainable as it uses all natural materials for the watches, the company also recycles and finds ways tominimize waste“to ensure as little effect on the environment as possible.”
On top of all that, they have some really NICE watches in very unique desgins! Prices start at $84. (On a budget? If you save up, one of these makes a great gift!)

There Are No Polar Bears in Brooklyn

I know it sounds crazy for me to being saying this on a rather “green” blog, but…

I don’t know what my carbon footprint is or what my greenhouse gas emissions are. I don’t count each and every kilowatt on my electric bill, I didn’t install solar panels on my roof, and I haven’t taken any steps to save the polar bears.

Not that there’s anything wrong with any of those things.

But there just aren’t any polar bears in Brooklyn where I live.

Where I live, the only green that most people are interested in is the kind that you pay bills with. So my perspective on being green is a little bit different. At my house we recycle and we reuse as much as possible. We sell things on ebay and give to goodwill before throwing things out. We no longer use paper towels, we print on both sides of copy paper before we shred them to use as packing material. I plan to start composting next . I make our laundry soap, our dishwashing detergent, our air freshener, our body creams and anything else I can think up and we don’t use bleach or harsh chemicals. We have power strips and dimmers in each room so that we turn electronics off when we’re not using them and we keep the thermostat at around 68 degrees. We use reusable grocery bags and we own energy star appliances. For the second year in a row, I’m growing a container vegetable garden.

BUT

I still leave too many lights on, we still own too many electronics, and we really don’t need more than one car. But the changes we’ve made are saving us money, we’re healthier, we’re saving and growing better one day at a time.

My point is, you can make yourself crazy trying to measure your eco-carbon-greenhouse-global-emissions-footprint. Or you can do your best to be healthier, save money and help your neighbor. I also believe that if we all made changes to our own homes, we might just be able to save that polar bear’s home at the same time.

So keep things simple. Do your best. But DO SOMETHING.

Earth Day was founded by U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson as an environmental day of speeches and events held on April 22, 1970 and is celebrated in more than 175 countries every year. Senator Nelson hand-picked Denis Hayes, a Harvard grad-student, activist and environmentalist to organize the first Earth Day events in the US. It was created to inspire concern and knowledge about nature and expose polluters. Earth Day marked the beginning of the modern environmental movement. Approximately 20 million Americans participated. Thousands of colleges and universities organized protests against oil spills, polluting factories and power plants, raw sewage, toxic dumps, pesticides, the loss of wilderness, and the extinction of wildlife. It has grown from a day to be celebrated to an entire week of activities and environmental issues.

In 1989 Hayes created Green Seal, a non-profit group that created science-based environmental standards to help consumers make green choices about products they buy, and to hold manufacturers that list with them to environmental standards. The “Green Seal” is still in use today. Hayes took Earth Day international in 1990 and organized events in 141 nations. Earth Day is now observed each year on April 22 in virtually every country on Earth and is now coordinated globally by the Earth Day Network.

People observe Earth Day in many different ways, some people plant trees and clean up city parks, others organize protests, other donate to charity or simply take little steps to go “green”. I personally like looking at all of the different info that pops up during this week. I always seem to learn something new, find great ideas and items that not only will help me save the environment, but often save money too! (My Earth Day goal by the way, is to start composting….I’ll post more info on it soon.)
