Here’s a message that landed in my inbox a few weeks ago. I’m sure more of you have had this problem.

”…I have one quick question: I’ve been natural for about 5 years but the hair in the front of my head is still straight and will not grow or get thick no matter what I do. Do you know of anything that might help me? I usually do twists but when it comes to the front my hair usually looks like I haven’t done a thing to it the next day. Can’t wait to hear from you.”
Your up and coming all natural sister,
Mo

Hi Monique!

Everyone seems to have different textures of hair on their head. (Myself included, it drives me nuts!) It’s possible that past relaxers/hot pressing has changed the texture of your hair in that area. I am not a certified hair dresser, but here’s what’s worked for me in the past:

Styling tips:

Flat twist damp hair instead of two-strand twisting the front and use a little gel to give it more body. Need some help flat-twisting? Check out this great tutorial by Autumn, The Retro Natural

Use hair clips in your hair near the front near the scalp to lift hair from the root, and give the impression of more body. These are great to use.

For hair growth and less shedding:

Scalp massage – Massage stimulates the follicles at the point of contact, and has been proven to aid in hair growth. Fleurzty of Texture Playground has a great video on how to do it right.

Tea Rinses – These are great for dry scalp and breaking hair. Just be sure to rinse them out thoroughly and follow up with a deep conditioning. Check out my post on Why I Love Tea Rinses

Don’t Pull Hair too Tightly – The hair around the edges of the scalp is the weakest and most sensitive, pulling it into tight braids, buns or puffs for extended periods of time can make it even weaker.

Apply a healthy growth product – like Nature’s Blessings and massage it into the thinning area (My dad did this and it filled in his bald spot!)

Protect your hair under your hats – Natural fiber hats tend to pull and snag on the hair when worn. Protect your hair by wearing a silk scarf or bonnet on your head under the scarf. Or wear hats that are silk or fur lined and don’t pull on hair at the front. In the fall I like wearing a satin bonnet under my hats. You can buy a satin bonnet here. I like wearing my furry aviator like the one below over my head during the winter. It won’t mess up my style or snag on curls. You can buy a fur lined aviator hat here.

Last week, Carolynn of the HoneyCee Blog emailed me about a blog post she did all about conditioners and natural hair. I thought it was REALLY informative and upon her request decided to repost part of it here.

Excerpt from “Conditioner: the Natural Girlz Creamy Crack!”:

“I was de-tangling my hair with my new found favorite conditioner and it occurred to me that conditioner is to a lot of natural women what relaxers are to chemically straightened women: CRACK! I mean lets be real about the situation, if there is one thing that most natural women can’t go without its conditioner. Whether it be a leave-in, moisturizer, or a rinse out we panic when we’re about to run out lol. So, I decided to do a little research on this product that we love so much and discover what it is really that makes this product beneficial to our hair.

Here is what I found:

*Conditioner is meant to help replace the moisture that clarifying shampoos can take from the hair such as the hairs natural oil (sebum) and give strength to the hair shaft.

*All hair conditioners fall under 6 categories: re-constructors, moisturizers, acidifiers, thermal protectors, detanglers, oils and glossers…..”

To read the rest of Carolynn’s article go to The HoneyCee Blog.

I’m going to pick up some of the Tresemme Naturals Nourishing Moisture Conditioner that she talks about in her post and do a review. anyone else out there use this stuff?

Thank you so much to all of you who have made Savvy Brown a succes this year! As the blog turns 1 I am humbled by all that I have met and learned this year. Thank you to allof you who took the time to comment, email, follow me, friend me and guest post! This post is dedicated to you! I invite you to continue the journey again with me in 2011! I promise more how-tos, interview, giveaways and even a video or two! I wish you and your family a healthy, prosperous, green New Year! I leave you with two lovely emails I received from readers recently… HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE!!

This email came to me from Marisa:

HI Savvy

I want to thank you for your blog. You have saved me tons of money and time. First off we have similar interest—going green and staying green on a budget without compromising who you are. Thankfully for me, you gathered all the information and published it. How easy for me! I found your site from reading comments on a Curly Nikki forum. I think you commented and included a link to your blog. Back to the savings…seriously you have saved us tons sista!

We no longer:

use paper towels/napkins…cha ching.

use commercial cleaners (i.e. pine-sol, windex, fill in the blank)

use fabric softner, bleach and detergents

eat commercial microwave popcorn

have headaches, itchy skin, and Lord knows what else

We are lovers of borax, arm & hammer washing soda, castile soap, vinegar, peroxide, baking soda, essential oils, aluminum foil and cloths.

I am still trying to get Boo (hubby) to utilize the household notebook and to stop spraying Lysol. However, I have hope he will get there.

Keep up the good work in 2011!

and this one came to me from Elle:

My family recently completed the Dr. Bronner’s 30 day challenge and I’m a believer! We already used the castille soap as shampoo/bodywash and loved it so this was right up our alley. There were two uses I wasn’t completely happy with, though. I didn’t like it as dish soap, seemed to leave a film on the dishes. And since we used peppermint I didn’t like it as hand soap. Two words; paper cuts. During the challenge I also found that it’s a superior alternative to baby laundry detergent. Wish I had known this sooner. Diaper leak stains come out like magic and socks I thought would never get back to their original color look like new. The best part is that it’s been a little over 5 weeks and we still have 1/2 of the half gallon left. The mistake we made before taking the challenge was using it full strength as shampoo/bodywash. Not sure of the science behind it but the dilution is the “magic” of Dr. Bronner’s. Thank you sooo much for this post.

How we used Dr. Bronner’s Peppermint Castille Soap:
Shampoo/Bodywash
Bathroom Cleaner
Pre-Treater
Liquid Laundry Detergent (+ Oxygenated Laundry Booster)
Foaming Face Wash
Shaving Gel
Soft Scrub

Thank you so much for letting me know that some of my little ideas worked out for you! It really made me feel good that I actually helped someone with my lil blog. That was my whole purpose for starting it! I truly appreciate any and all feedback and hope to get even more from all of you in 2011!

This question came from blog reader Marrissa who was curious about my makeup reggie.

Hey Savvy,

I have been reading the site for a while now. You posted something on curly nikki in the forum and I came on over. Here is my question for you–do you wear makeup? I assume you do not. Most ladies I see that are natural are still packing on make-up filled with all the harsh chemicals. I guess they have not made the connection that your skin can be chemical free too. I stopped wearing make up when I started transitioning. I started transitioning because of health reasons. I decided to stop relaxing when watching black in america 2′s segment about triple negative cancer rates in black women. So my sister and friends were excited to get all my mac products but did not want to hear the reason why.

- Marisa

Yes Marrissa! I absolutely wear makeup, but I chose to wear healthier versions of it. Many people think I don’t wear makeup, but I do. (I swear! See pics below). I just like a more natural look. My makeup is 99% free of parabens, sulfate, synthetic dyes, synthetic fragrance, mineral oil, petro-chemicals and phtalates. The only thing I don’t usually wear is blush because it makes me break out and I don’t wear eye shadow because I have NO CLUE how to apply it!

Here’s what I use almost every day:

Foundation – Bare Escentuals Bare Minerals Original Mineral Foundation 100% Pure mineral powder with an SPF of 15 $25

Color: Deep

I lightly brush this all over my face and it instantly evens out my skin tone. I have noticed, however, that I do have to re-apply before the end of the day if I’m goin out. )I’ve been told that topping off the foundation with BE Mineral Veil will give my makeup it more staying power, but I haven’t tried that yet. The titianium and zinc powders are what provide the sun protection. Positive: Great coverage, it comes in any color for any complexion and the stuff lasts forever. (You’ll need to replace your brush before you need to replace the powder) Negative: It’s messy. Because there are no parabens, it’s basically loose powder and it can get everywhere if you’re not careful. To find out what shade you are stop buy a makeup place like Sephora and they’ll help you find your color for free!

Ingredients:
Titanium Dioxide 12.6%, Zinc Oxide 21%. Inactive Ingredients: Bismuth Oxychloride, Mica, Iron Oxides, Zinc Oxide, Titanium Dioxide

Buy Bare Minerals SPF 15 Mineral Makeup at the Savvy Shop

Concealer – Korres Wild Rose Concealer $20

Color: Mocha (WRC6)

Ingredients: Water, Isocetyl Stearate, Butylene Glycol, Octyldodecanol, Sorbitan Stearate, Hydrogenated Polyisobutene, Isohexadecane, Potassium Cetyl Phosphate, Polysorbate60, Silica, Phenoxyethanol, Glyceryl Stearate, Glycerin, Acrylates/C10-30 Alkyl Acrylate Crosspolymer, Cetyl PEG/PPG-10/1 Dimethicone, Sorbic Acid, Caprylyl Glycol, Tetrasodium EDTA, Hexylene Glycol, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Xanthan Gum, Retinyl Palmitate, Tocopheryl Acetate, Tocopherol, Ascorbyl Palmitate, Rosa Canina Fruit Extract, Laminaria Digitata Extract, Camellia Sinensis Leaf Extract, (+/- (May contain) Mica, Titanium Dioxide, Iron Oxides, Ultramarines, Chromium Oxide greens, Chromium Oxide green.)

This comes in a neat tube with a brush at the end, that allows you to brush the concealer right on. Positive: Goes on light with great coverage, lasts a long time, and comes in a recyclable container. Negatives: this is the darkest shade they have, and it has a little dimethicone in it. (I don’t use it in my hair because of the sulfates needed to wash it out). It won’t kill you, but I’m also experimenting with mixing some of the BE with water and using that as a concealer.

Buy Korres Wild Rose concealer at the Savvy Shop

Lipliner – MAC Lip Pencil

Color – Chestnut

This is the only product I’m using that is not natural. (What can I say? I’m a work in progess.) I’m looking to replace this ASAP, but I haven’t found a natural lipliner out there in this shade.

Any suggestions?

Lipgloss – Kiss My Face Sheer Organic Shine (SOS) lipgloss* $5.27

Color- Garnet

Ingredients: Castor Seed Oil, Beeswax (Apis Mellifera), Canola Oil (Glossamer), Jojoba Oil, Shea Butter, French Vanilla Flavor, Chocolate Flavor, Peppermint Oil, Cocoa Butter, Tocopherol (non GMO), Mica, Titanium Dioxide, Iron Oxide, Stevia

This is what you’ll see me in 99% of the time and what I’m wearing in the pic below. Postitive: It goes on easily with a nice tint that blends well with my lipliner. Negative: need to re-apply often, and only 5 colors

*I’ve also used Bare Escentuals I.D. Buxom Healthy lipgloss, which also has natural ingredients but has a stronger color.

Buy Kiss My Face Sheer Organic Shine Lipgloss at the Savvy Shop

Eyeliner – Sephora PURE Eyeliner $6 (it used to be $12!)

Color: Black

At the time of this posting, I could not find the exact ingredients to this product, but the entire Sephora PURE line is made without parabens, sulfate, synthetic dyes, synthetic fragrance, petro-chemicals and phtalates and claims to have 10% ingredients. Positives: It goes on smooth and creamy, great for my sensitive eyes (I wear contacts) Negatives: it runs a bit when it’s warm

Buy Sephora PURE Eyeliner at the Savvy Shop

Mascara – Sephora PURE Mascara $8 (it used to be $16!)

Color: Panther Black
Ingredients: Lavandula Intermedia Flower/Leaf/Stem Extract*, Beeswax*, Glycerin, Hydrolyze Corn Starch, Copernicia Cerifera (Carnauba) Wax*, Sucrose Polystearate, Maltooligos Gyllucoside, Stearic Acid, Arginine, Beheny Alcohol, Glyceryl Caprylate, Hydrogenate Starch Hydrolysate, Polyglyceryl-10 Laurate, Silica, Sodium Stearoyl Glutamate, Glyceryl Stearate, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil*, Citrus Medica Limonum (Lemon) Peel Oil*, Tocopherol, Lonicera Caprifolium (Honeysuckle) Flower Extract, Lonicera Japonica (Honeysuckle) Flower Extract, Glycine Soja (Soybean) Sterols, Phospholipids, lsopropyl Myristate, Cetearyl Olivate, Sorbitan Olivate, Bentonite, Bisabolol, Water, Citric Acid. May Contain: Mica, lron Oxides (Cl77491, Cl77492, C l77499), Titanium Dioxide (Cl 77891), Carmine (C|75470).
* Ingredients from Organic Farming.

I LOVE this mascara! It doesn’t bother my contacts, and it goes on and stays on. It’s great. And you can’t beat the price and it comes in and comes in a recyclable container. I don’t have any negatives to post about this product.

This Meatless Monday contribution comes from subscriber Amanda. It’s a yummy soup that I think I will make tonight! (This should last most of the week!)

Green Lentil Soup Recipe

Ingredients
2 c Green lentils ( I buy in bulk from Whole Foods)
1 large bag spinach – try not to buy baby spinach, larger tougher leaves hold up better in the soup
8 oz sliced mushrooms – optional. I love mushrooms so I put them in EVERYTHING!!
32oz Vegetable Stock – I like Kitchen Basics, also available at WF
2C water
1 large finely chopped onion
4-5 stalks finely chopped celery
1 chopped carrot
2 bay leaves
1 lemon and/or 2-4Twhite wine or champagne vinegar
salt and pepper
olive oil

Directions

I used an enameled dutch oven. Any largish soup pot with a lid will work. I always prep EVERYTHING before cooking. It makes it so much easier.

Wash the lentils in a few changes of water. I wash my lentils in a bowl, pour the water off into another container and use it for my plants instead of dumping down the drain!

Saute the onions, celery, carrot and bay leaves in olive oil over medium high heat. Add the drained lentils, the veggie stock and water.

Bring to a boil, then cover and lower to a simmer. Cook for 30-45 minutes. (add more water if they start to dry out). Once the lentils are tender, add mushrooms, pepper and salt to taste (adding salt before the lentils soften up can make them tough and they take longer to cook). Cook for 5-10 min and then stir in the spinach and cover the pot. Turn off heat and let sit for 5 min.

Once the spinach is wilted, check the seasoning, adjust to taste. The last thing is to squeeze the lemon and/or add a little vinegar – but not too much!! The acid gives the soup a little je ne sais quoi….Like my grandmother used to say, “Delish!”

I hope you’ll try it!

I will Amanda! Thanks! (And for those of you doing Vida Star’s “Life Star Beauty Health and Hair Challenge”, this will give you 2 servings of veggies and 1 serving of water in one sitting!

raw yucc

Ingredients
2 or 3 scallions, chopped
3 or 4 cloves of garlic, minced
2 tbsp olive oil
2 pounds of chicken, cut into cubes (use free-range chicken for better flavor)
poultry seasoning — to taste
salt and pepper to taste
4 cups of organic free-range chicken broth (or vegetable broth)
4 cups of water
1/2 pound of carrots, chopped
1 pound of yuca, cubed (yuca is very hard to cut so see if you can get it roughly chopped)

Directions:
Heat the olive oil in a heavy soup pot. Fry the scallions and the garlic in the oil until the scallions are a little transparent and the garlic is fragrant. Add the chicken and the seasoning and the salt and pepper and fry all that until the chicken is a little browned. Pour in the broth and the water. Let this simmer for some time. Then add the chopped vegetables. Let that simmer until the yuca is soft and absorbs the flavor of the broth. The chicken should come apart easily when you go at it with a spoon. I serve it over brown rice or cous cous.

Thanks Andrea!

Akinseye writes…

The heating unit went out on my dryer! The gentleman that fixes things around the house for us told us that he wanted to show us something and he went over to the dryer and pulled out the lint filter. It was clean. (I always clean the lint from the filter after every load of clothes.) He took the filter over to the sink and ran hot water over it. The lint filter is made of a mesh material. Well …. the hot water just sat on top of the mesh! It didn’t go through it at all! He told us that dryer sheets cause a film over that mesh – that’s what burns out the heating unit.

You can’t SEE the film, but it’s there. It’s what is in the dryer sheets to make your clothes soft and static free. You know how they can feel waxy when you take them out of the box… well this stuff builds up on your clothes and on your lint screen. This is also what causes dryer units to potentially burn your house down with it! He said the best way to keep your dryer working for a very long time (and to keep your electric bill lower) is to take that filter out and wash it with hot soapy water and an old toothbrush at least every six months. He said that increases the life of the dryer at least twice as long! How about that!?! Learn something new everyday! I certainly didn’t know dryer sheets would do that. So, I thought I’d share!

Note: I went to my dryer and tested my screen by running water on it. The water ran through a little bit but mostly collected all the water in the mesh screen. I washed it with warm soapy water and a nylon brush and I had it done in 30 seconds. Then when I rinsed it … the water ran right thru the screen! There wasn’t any puddling at all! That repairman knew what he was talking about!

Thanks ‘Seye!

I’m having our dryer services this week, but from now on we’ll rinse the filter out as well. This is reason number 547 why I love dryer Balls! If you don’t know what those are, check this post out.

This email exchange is from reader mrs.cuunninham.07 about her doctor wanting to give her daughter a medicine with some ingredients she wasn’t comfortable with.
This is an example of how you need to ask your doctor questions, and KEEP asking them…

mrs.cunningham.07
“… After having to take my 10 month old to her pediatrician for some intestinal issues (there a stomach bug spreading here in SC) I was given a Rx that has 2 parabens listed in the ingredients. Although both parabens are the last 2 ingredients it still scares me. What is the best way to handle such a dilemma? I know that Corigan needs to get better and this is what her Doctor has recommended to help the problem but my “Mommy instincts” tell me there has to be another way specifically a more natural way…”

savvy
I’m not a doctor… but I do question why your daughter is being given medication for just a “stomach bug”. I could see if she had some type of bacterial infection, but I would need more info. You should trust your “mommy instincts” and ask your doctor what the following…
- Is the medication specifically for your daughter’s particular ailment? Or is it just “preventing” the stomach bug that’s going around?
- You would feel more comfortable trying to solve this problem naturally first if possible, and then if that doesn’t work you’d be willing to try the medication. Is there anything else that you could give her to eat or drink that might work?

Keep a record of how often her stomach causes problems, what her symptoms are, when and if she has diarrhea, when and if she’s throwing up, weight loss, what types of food does she favor? Salty? Sweet? Bitter? Hot ? Cold? Are her hands and feet cold often? Is she on any other medication? Does she have diaper rash? Does she have allergies? what are those symptoms? I know it seems like a lot, but make sure your doctor knows all of the above. If she still insists on the medication, then see if there is a reputable naturaopathic doctor in your area. If not, don’t be afraid to get a second opinion. In the meantime make sure your daughter stays well hydrated, and if your daughter is NOT allergic to ginger, try making some chamomile tea and put a slice of real ginger in it and a squeeze of fresh lemon into it. Let it cool a bit, and then let your daughter sip it, it might calm her tummy a bit. DON’T sweeten it with honey.

mrs.cunningham.07
Hi Savvy, [she] does have a bacterial infection that’s why the doctor prescribed the medication. Sorry I wasn’t too clear on that . Well I’ve spoken to the nurse at her pediatricians office, she informed me that if I didn’t feel comfortable about the meds then I def didn’t HAVE to give it to [her] b/c she can get better on her own as long as I watched her diet & keep her hydrated. Which I have been. I just don’t understand why a Dr would prescribe meds with parabens listed in the ingredients. My mom has info for a naturaopathic doctor so I can back up her pediatricians rec’s on medications. I appreciate you taking the time to hear me out. I don’t really have anyone else to discuss these things with besides my mother and we are both taking this journey together so we have more to learn. Thanks again!
It’s really important to ask your doctor questions and not just to take what they’re saying at face value. And if they don’t want to answer your questions…find another doctor.

Thanks mrs.cuunninham.07 for allowing me to share your story!
