henna video

I mentioned missymistique in my last post My Henna Gloss Recipe, and here is the video as promised. Missy uses some interesting ingredients like “purple antioxidants” that I’d like to try. For those of you with natural hair that are new to/struggling with henna, this tutorial video will be very helpful to you.

My Henna Gloss Recipe

henna pic

It’s been awhile since my last henna. One of the reasons is that the process is rather time consuming. You really need to block out a chunk of your day or night to do it. Don’t get me wrong, it’s worth it, as you can see in my My First Henna and subsequent So I Tried Henna Again posts.

I decided to try Henna gloss for 2 reasons, from what I’ve read the process is shorter, and because you’re mixing the henna with conditioner, clean up (of both your hair and your bathroom) is easier.

It’s true.

Here’s what I did:

The heat this summer has forced me to change up my style a bit. Y’all know I love my twistout, but when it’s 125 degrees outside, my hair goes up. So I thought I’d show you some of the styles I’ve been sporting this summer. Some (if you follow this blog) you’ve seen before, some are new.

Well here’s a happy accident… I mistakenly bought this product when I was looking to buy Shea Moisture’s Curl Enhancing Smoothie. Instead of taking it back, I decided to try it and talk about it. So here’s my review of Shea Moisture’s Deep Treatment Masque:

Shea Moisture’s Deep Treatment Masque $9.99 (12 oz.)

Ingredients: Deionized water, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea Butter), argan oil, cetyl esters, sea kelp extract, panthenol (vitamin B-5), ammonium salt, essential oil blend, avocado oil, lonicera caprifolium (honeysuckle) flower (and) lonicera japonica (Japanese honeysuckle) flower extract, tocopherol (vitamin E), hyssopus officinalis extract, salvia officinalis (sage) leaf and equisetum arvense extract, soybean oil, daucus carota sativa (carrot) seed oil.

The directions on this product state that it can be used as a deep conditioner, and that you should apply it to damp or wet hair, leave on for 5 or 30 minutes and thoroughly rinse. OR you can leave it in your hair and style as usual. Well, since I’m always trying

Review: KBB “Butter Love”

So this is more of the stash that I picked up on my trip to Karen’s Body Beautiful here in Brooklyn last month. I actually bought more of this product than her Creamyliscious but in hindsight, I think I should have swtiched that around.

Karen’s Body Beautiful Butter Love $18.00 ($8.00 travel size)

Ingredients: Shea Butter, Cocoa Butter, Mango Butter, Jojoba Butter, Aloe Butter, Essential and/or Fragrance Oils, Grapefruit Seed Oil & Vitamin

The consistency of this product is a like slightly melted pomade. The thing that’s nice about this product is a little goes a long way. It’s also extremely moisturizng.

Review: Trader Joe’ Tea Tree Tingle Condish

Posted in Hair, Hair Archive | Thursday, June 2nd, 2011

Trader Joes logo2_header

I know I’m like the last person to try using this product because I’ve been reading about it on natural hair boards and blogs for awhile now. It’s just that, if I’m already using products I like, that work for me, it’s hard to tear me way. (I’m a creature of habit I guess.) So when I ran out of my Giovanni Smooth as Silk Conditioner and I found myself in Trader Joe’s one day, I decided that I would try Trader Joe’s Tea Tree Tingle Conditioner. I’m glad I did!

Trader Joe’s Tea TreeTingle Conditioner $3.99 (16oz.)

Ingredients: water, tea tree, peppermint oil, eucalyptus oil, nettle oil, thyme oil, birch leaf oil, chamomile oil, clary, coltsfoot leaf, yarrow oil, mallow, horsetail oil, soybean protein, cetyl alcohol, vitamin e, trace minerals, citric acid, sodium hydroxymethylgycinate, grape seed oil

This stuff is great! It has incredible slip, and I was able to detangle my sopping wet hair

Review: Karen’s Body Beautiful Creamylicious

I live in Brooklyn, NY so I when I get the time I love dropping by Karen’s Body Beautiful. I’ve been lucky enough a couple of times to actually see Karen, (apron and all) mixing up a batch of her wonderful products. A couple of weeks ago I dropped by and picked up a sample size of Creamylicious and decided to share the results.

Karen’s Body Beautiful Creamylicious $8.00 (1oz)/$18.00(7oz)

Ingredients: Shea Butter, Rosehip Oil, Vegetable Glycerin, Essential and/or Fragrance Oils, Vitamin E & Carrot Seed Oil

I love the fact that this product has all recognizable ingredients. It has a thick, creamy, cake-batter-like consistency, which at first I thought might not be moisturizing enough, but when I rubbed it between my fingers I could really feel the emollience of the shea butter and the oils in the product.
