I kept passing this stuff whenever I was at Target, because I remember the old Shea Moisture brand, (remember the ones in the white bottles with the red and green lettering?) and they were chock full of icky ingredients. Then one day someone asked me had I tried their reformulated shampoo and I got curious. I’d already tried their Deep Treatment Masque, and I really like it. So I thought I’d check the shampoo out for you guys. Here’s my review:

Shea Moisture Organic Raw Shea Butter Moisture Retention Shampoo (12 oz.) $9.99

Ingredients: De-ionized water, Decyl Glucoside (sugar beets), African Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea butter) (denotes certified organic ingredients), aloe vera leaf juice, Argan Oil, Panthenol (pro-vitamin B-5, rosemary extract, sea kelp extract, vitamin E, Lonicera Caprifolium (honeysuckle) flower and Lonicera Japonica (Japanese honeysuckle) flower extract.

Ok so, I separated my hair into sections and washed each section with this stuff, concentrating mostly on my scalp and well wow. First of all, a little goes a long way. It really
suds up! Which made me nervous enough to re-read the ingredients like 5 times to make sure that it didn’t have any sulfates in it.

It doesn’t.

I really judge shampoos by how well they clean my scalp, because I don’t really put much on my hair when I use them. (Unless I’m rinsing out some crazy product I’ve tried). I use my conditioner for that. This product really got my scalp clean on the first try! I also don’t believe in shampooing more than once.(I read somewhere, that that’s just a manufacturer’s claim to get you use up more of the product more quickly). It was extremely emollient with a lot of slip. So much, in fact, that I was able to finger detangle the section BEFORE I used my Trader Joe’s Condish and detangling comb to finish the job!.

On top of that, my skin felt great! In fact, I’ve used this shampoo as a body wash a couple of times, I love the scent and the shea butter really softens my skin. I even squirt a little on my pumice stone at the end of a shower to scrub at my heels and elbows. Nice!

RATING: 5 Savvy!* – Great product, great ingredients, great price, multi-use!

You can find this product in bulk at the Savvy Shop

My girl Scarlett is back with some new products in the Wonder Curl line and I couldn’t wait to try them! I’ve reviewed and done giveaways on her Wonder Curl Get Set Hair Jelly here on the blog, and so I was excited when she told me that she was coming out with another product call Butter Than Love. It comes in two formulations: pudding and whipped. Here, I’ll review both:

Wonder Curl Butter than Love Whipped 4oz. $12.00

Ingredients:
Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Castor Oil, Shea Butter, Caprylic/Capric/Stearic Glycerides,Cetyl Alcohol, Glyceryl Stearate, Cetearyl Alcohol, Sodium Stearoyl Lactylate, Acrylates/C-10 Alkyl Acrylates, Phenoxyethanol, Ethylhexylglycerin

Although some of the ingredients aren’t 100% natural, the product does not contain any sulfates, parabens, cones, mineral oil, or petrolatum. I also know for a fact that Scarlett makes this product in her kitchen, where I’m sure she wouldn’t be handling any harmful chemicals!

This product is thick and rich and emollient. I like using thicker products on freshly washed damp hair because I think they lock in the moisture better because since they have less water in them, there’s less to evaporate. (I would say that I have 4a/4b hair with 4c back in my “kitchen”.) I damp twisted my hair with this product and added a dab of [WonderCurl Get Set Hair Jelly] to about 11 medium-large sized twists (because it was really humid and rainy out) and let them air dry. In the morning, I untwisted and fluffed and got these fab results!

My curls were nice and defined, but did shrink a bit (which I don’t mind) and were definitely tight that first day. After a couple of days they loosened up a bit.

Wonder Curl Butter than Love Pudding 4oz. $12.00

Ingredients
*Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Castor Oil, Cetyl Alcohol, Shea Butter, Sodium Stearoyl Lactylate, Acrylates/C-10 Alkyl Acrylates

Now this product is a little thinner, has less chemicals and reminds me of the consistency of thick conditioner. I used this mid-week last week when my twist out was in need of a little TLC, and my hair felt a little dry. I spritzed each section with a little Oyin Handmade and slicked each section with Love Pudding before twisting. This product alone, doesn’t seem to provide much hold, so again I paired it with WonderCurl Get Set Hair Jelly, and twisted up 10 or 11 sections.

The results were soft moisturized hair that extended my twist out a few more days before wash day. I also like smoothing this product on my edges before I put a scarf on to smooth out my up dos.

RATING: 4 Smart! – Good ingredients, great price, curls looked great, will buy again!*

*Savvy Ratings: 5=Savvy 4=Smart 3=Suitable 2=Satisfactory 1=Stupid

I’m back with another review of Amazing Botanicals Products. Last week I reviewed the Pumpkin Pomade and this week, I decided to double-up the review by trying both the Aloe Mint Spritz and the Hibiscus Cream Gel.

Amazing Botanicals Aloe Mint Spritz $7.00

Ingredients: Distilled water and Aloe Juice infused with Marshmallow root, Burdock, Nettle, Horsetail, Plantain Extract, Irish Moss and Peppermint, Behentrimonium Methosulfate , Cetyl Alcohol, Jojoba oil, Black Castor oil, Baobab, Wildflower Honey,Polysorbate 20, Panthenol, Neem Oil, and Rosemary

Amazing Botanicals Hibiscus Gel $5.00 (2oz.)

Ingredients: Distilled Water, Flaxseed, Hibiscus tea infusion,Chamomile, Aloe Gel, Optiphen,Rosemary, Lavender, Sunflower, Glycerin, Xantham Gum

After washing my hair I squeezed out the excess water with my microfiber towel. I then sprayed the hair in sections with the Aloe Mint Spritz. I then applied the creamy Hibiscus Gel to each section liberally. It really has the consistency of conditioner and has a nice, flowery scent. (It’s not overpowering though). I then two-strand twisted the hair into about 10 large sections using a new method I will reveal in an upcoming post! wiggles eyebrows

Day 1

Day two

I actually got four days of this twist out before it started getting fuzzy. The creamy Hibiscus Gel provides great definition with soft hold. It’s not crunchy at all like some of the other clear gels out there. I loved it! The Spritz conditioned my hair well too, and did a good job of rehydrating my hair the second day. I was skeptical that a 2oz. Jar of anything could handle all of my hair, but I’ve done this process twice now, and I still haven’t finished it. A little goes a long way!

RATING: 5 Savvy! – Great ingredients, great price, curls looked great, will buy again!*

SPECIAL!

The Top 5 Oils For Healthy Beautiful Hair

There are an abundance of natural oils that can help you to achieve beautiful, healthy looking hair. In this blog post, I want to share my top five.

Without further ado, let’s get going…

Olive Oil

Olive oil is perhaps the most effective oil for your hair. It works to strengthen, nourish and condition, while also cleansing your hair of harsh chemical products.

Here’s a fantastic, and really simple, olive oil recipe for your hair.

1. In a glass jar pour approximately half a cup of good quality extra virgin olive oil. Add five drops of rosemary oil (or another essential oil of your choice, such as tea tree, lavender or frankincense) and shake well.

2. Allow the mixture to settle for at least 24 hours in a cool place away from direct sunlight and then shake again before use.

3. Pour a tablespoon measure of the oil into your hands and rub to warm it up. Gently massage the warmed olive oil mixture onto your hair. Start by massaging into the scalp and then move to the tips.

4. Once the scalp and tips of your hair have been covered, secure a plastic bag around your hair and leave for half an hour.

5. Finally, rinse your hair in the shower and shampoo – preferably using a natural shampoo.

You will now be left with soft, silky, stronger looking hair.

One further benefit of olive oil is that it can help to stimulate new hair growth. For more information have a read of the below article.

How To Use Olive Oil For Hair Growth

Coconut Oil

Coconut oil has been used extensively in the Indian Subcontinent for many years. Sri Lankans, Phillipinos and Malaysians swear by the sweet smelling oil.

There are a number of components that make coconut oil so effective at healing damaged hair, preventing hair from aging and nourishing and moisturizing. For example:

- Lauric acid is an antimicrobial agent that stops one of the primary reasons for hair loss – microbial action.

- Vitamin E is one of the most important vitamins for skin and hair care. Coconut oil possesses an abundance of vitamin E that serves to revitalise and rejuvenate your hair and scalp.

- Coconut oil is not broken down easily. This means it has a high moisture retaining capacity. This reduces the breakage of hair and retains moisture keeping your hair looking soft and shiny.

Coconut oil is fantastic for your hair and I strongly recommend you include it in your hair care regimen. I’m a big fan of Vatika Coconut Hair Oil, and, so it seems, is Savvy. Have a read of her review of this product at the link below.

Vatika Coconut Hair Oil Review

Castor Oil

Castor oil has huge benefits for de-frizzing out of control hair, eliminating split ends and getting rid of dandruff.

It is an oil extracted from the castor bean plant and can be used in a multitude of ways for your hair. Firstly, it works to cleanse your scalp of dirt and bacteria, secondly it heals scalp infections and side effects of using harsh chemical products, and finally it moisturizes and hydrates your hair and scalp eliminating brittle hair and a flaky scalp.

Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree oil has two important properties that make it an effective essential oil for our hair. It is antiseptic and fights bacteria, mites and head lice. It is antifungal and helps to fight the fungal infection ‘malessezia fur fur’ with only a 5% concentration. This fungal infection is one of the primary causes of dandruff.

Tea tree oil is nutrient dense and helps to nourish hair, reduce breakage, retain moisture and leave hair looking soft and shiny. It is also effective at preventing hair loss and promoting hair growth.

You can buy a bottle of tea tree oil for just over $5 from the SavvyBrown.com shop at the link below.

Tea Tree 100% Pure Essential Oil

Argan Oil

Argan oil, derived from the kernels of the Argan tree in Morocco, has a number of medicinal and cosmetic properties that makes it fantastic for your hair.

Firstly, it is a rich source of vitamin E which we have already discussed is fantastic for your skin and hair. It also contains omega 3 and 9 fatty acids that help to penetrate the hair shaft and deliver nutrients directly to the hair follicles.

To reap the maximum benefits of Argan oil simply massage gently onto the scalp. It will help to exfoliate and remove dead skin cells.

If you want to learn more about Argan oil for hair, simply click the link.

In this blog post I’ve shared what I believe to be the top five best oils for your hair – but don’t take this as gospel. There are lots of other oils out there that have important benefits for our hair health. Some that spring to mind include lavender, rosemary, jojoba and almond oil.

Well here’s a happy accident… I mistakenly bought this product when I was looking to buy Shea Moisture’s Curl Enhancing Smoothie. Instead of taking it back, I decided to try it and talk about it. So here’s my review of Shea Moisture’s Deep Treatment Masque:

Shea Moisture’s Deep Treatment Masque $9.99 (12 oz.)

Ingredients: Deionized water, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea Butter), argan oil, cetyl esters, sea kelp extract, panthenol (vitamin B-5), ammonium salt, essential oil blend, avocado oil, lonicera caprifolium (honeysuckle) flower (and) lonicera japonica (Japanese honeysuckle) flower extract, tocopherol (vitamin E), hyssopus officinalis extract, salvia officinalis (sage) leaf and equisetum arvense extract, soybean oil, daucus carota sativa (carrot) seed oil.

The directions on this product state that it can be used as a deep conditioner, and that you should apply it to damp or wet hair, leave on for 5 or 30 minutes and thoroughly rinse. OR you can leave it in your hair and style as usual. Well, since I’m always trying to cut down on the length of my routine, I chose the latter option. I washed and twisted my hair using my usual routine. Then I damp dried my hair with my microfiber towel. I two-strand twisted my whole head in medium sized twists using about a dime sized amount in each section. Then I pulled back the twists and wore them around for a few days. About 3 days later, I untwisted and fluffed and this was the result

My hair was incredibly soft and moisturized, but I like a little more definition in my twists. Next time, I’ll use a little dab of gel in each twist, and I think it’ll give me the definition that I want. As for the conditioning. My hair felt great! It was soft, my scalp felt great, and the next time I washed, it detangled well too! I like the fact that this product is a multi-tasker, and can be used for more than one thing. The ingredients are good too. It’s my first product with argan oil, but I’m researching it and I hope to review more!

RATING*: 5=Savvy! – Good product, good ingredients, multi-tasker and great price.

As always. This product is available in the Savvy Shop

*Savvy Ratings: 5=Savvy 4=Smart 3=Suitable 2=Satisfactory 1=Stupid

I actually bought more of this product than her Creamyliscious but in hindsight, I think I should have swtiched that around.

Karen’s Body Beautiful Butter Love $18.00 ($8.00 travel size)

Ingredients: Shea Butter, Cocoa Butter, Mango Butter, Jojoba Butter, Aloe Butter, Essential and/or Fragrance Oils, Grapefruit Seed Oil & Vitamin

The consistency of this product is a like slightly melted pomade. The thing that’s nice about this product is a little goes a long way. It’s also extremely moisturizng. That being said, it really doesn’t provide any hold, so my twistout, although cute for a day,and incredibly soft, it was all fluffy by the next day. (I like my twistouts to last at least four or five days.) The ingredients are great, but the price is kinda steep. And I love that there are no cones, parabens or icky stuff, but I kinda feel like I could make this. I’ll definitely be using the rest of this product to seal my ends when twisting and for deep conditioning. And the container is just waiting to be upcycled into my new hairclip holder.

RATING: 3 Suitable – Good product, great ingredients, kind of expensive for only one type of use.

This product is available from Karen’s Body Beautiful

I know I’m like the last person to try using this product because I’ve been reading about it on natural hair boards and blogs for awhile now. It’s just that, if I’m already using products I like, that work for me, it’s hard to tear me way. (I’m a creature of habit I guess.) So when I ran out of my Giovanni Smooth as Silk Conditioner and I found myself in Trader Joe’s one day, I decided that I would try Trader Joe’s Tea Tree Tingle Conditioner. I’m glad I did!

Trader Joe’s Tea TreeTingle Conditioner $3.99 (16oz.)

Ingredients: water, tea tree, peppermint oil, eucalyptus oil, nettle oil, thyme oil, birch leaf oil, chamomile oil, clary, coltsfoot leaf, yarrow oil, mallow, horsetail oil, soybean protein, cetyl alcohol, vitamin e, trace minerals, citric acid, sodium hydroxymethylgycinate, grape seed oil

This stuff is great! It has incredible slip, and I was able to detangle my sopping wet hair easily without using half of the bottle. The Tea Tree Oil and Peppermint definitely “tingle” my scalp and made it feel really clean. I had hardly any hair left in the shower or my comb when I was done. Then I used a bit to style my hair in my usual two-strand twists along with a bit of Eco-Styler Gel, and the twists came out great! And you just cant beat the price. 16 oz for less than $5?! On top of that the bottle is recyclable, and the poroduct is cruelty-free. (They didn’t hurt any bunnies to make it). I love when my beauty regiment aligns with my green routine. Love this stuff!

RATING: 5 Savvy!* – Great product, great ingredients, great price, earth friendly!

If you don’t live near a Trader Joe’s, this product is available in the Savvy Shop

I live in Brooklyn, NY so I when I get the time I love dropping by Karen’s Body Beautiful. I’ve been lucky enough a couple of times to actually see Karen, (apron and all) mixing up a batch of her wonderful products. A couple of weeks ago I dropped by and picked up a sample size of Creamylicious and decided to share the results.

Karen’s Body Beautiful Creamylicious $8.00 (1oz)/$18.00(7oz)

Ingredients: Shea Butter, Rosehip Oil, Vegetable Glycerin, Essential and/or Fragrance Oils, Vitamin E & Carrot Seed Oil

I love the fact that this product has all recognizable ingredients. It has a thick, creamy, cake-batter-like consistency, which at first I thought might not be moisturizing enough, but when I rubbed it between my fingers I could really feel the emollience of the shea butter and the oils in the product. (It reminds me a bit of Bee Mine Bee Hold, but with more oils in it.) I washed and detangled my hair, towel dried it and then used this product to make medium sized two-strand twists all over my damp hair using clear castor oil to seal the tips. The fragrance I picked was Coco Lime and it smelled like a lime fruit tart. Yum! I was really surprised, but the little 1oz sample did my whole head. (It costs $8.00) A little goes a long way. I believe that this product is good for all 4a,4b,4c hair types. I’m sure it wouldn’t hurt if your curls are 3C either. (For more info about hair typing, click here). As usual, I left them in a couple days before wearing my new favorite style: I untwist the twists carefully, but don’t fluff or separate, then style. (My hair is now long enough to do this and I think it looks pretty good). Whaddya think?

The twists came out soft, defined and shiny! I never really thought about shine, but the oils really made my hair sleek looking.

This product can be purchased at Karen’s Body Beautiful

RATING: 4 Smart! – Good product, very moisturizing, grod ingredients and a little goes a long way. (The only reason this product didn’t get a 5 is because of the price.)

It’s not often that I can find a conditioner for less that $10 that can multitask well, so I was pleasantly surprised when I tried Desert Organics Red Grape Conditioner. First, the important stuff:

Desert Organics Red Grape Conditioner $8.99 (on sale NOW for $5.40!)

Ingredients:

Aqueous Infusion of Certified Organic Extracts:, Vitis Vinifera (Grape) (Grape), Olea Europaea (Olive) Fruit Oil (Olive), Vitis Vinifera (Grape) Seed Oil (Grape), Helianthus Annuus Seed Oil (Sunflower), Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea Butter) Oil (Shea Butter), Emulsifying Wax (vegetable derived), Resveratrol, Red Wine Extract, Panthenol, Tocopherol (Natural Vitamin E), Prunus Amygdalus Protein (Almond), Polyquaternium 7 (coconut derived), Proprietary Blend of Natural Essential Oils, Phenoxyethanol, Potassium Glutamate, Potassium Sorbate

This product has no parabens, sulfates, cones, or other icky stuff, and it worked like a dream! I used it in the shower to detangle after I washed my hair. I detangled with my [shower comb] and didn’t even need to use any Vatika Oil like I usually do to help get the knots out. After I [towel dried] my hair, I realized that I was low on Hairveda’s Almond Glaze and ended up using more conditioner as a leave in and styling aid for my two-strand twists. As usual, I left them in a couple of days, but when I untwisted, my hair looked and felt great! I even added a little to my homemade Daily Leave-In Conditioner. And it helped keep my hair moisturized when it got parched a few days later and I was styling it into a puff.

The best part? It smells like grape soda..really!

It’s got multiple uses, my hair smelled and looked great, and it’s less than $10!

RATING: 5 *Savvy! – Great product, good ingredients, great price, multiple uses, will buy again!

As usual you can find this product at the Savvy Shop Check it out, it’s on sale right now!

I was curious when I saw that Jane Carter had come out with a sulfate-free shampoo. (One would think her line is completely sulfate-free, but unfortunately it’s not). However, most of her line is cone, paraben and mineral oil-free. This shampoo (and most of her line) is for all curly hair types. (I’ve been using this shampoo for a couple of weeks now, and here’s the scoop:

Jane Carter Solution: Hydrating Invigorating SLS-free Shampoo $7.99

Ingredients: Aloe Barbadensis Gel, Purified Water, (aqueous extracts of nettle, burdock, and rosemary), Sodium Methyl Sulfolaurate, Disodium Sulfolaurate, Sodium Sulfoacetate, Sodium Cocoyl Glycinate, Sodium Lauroyl, Sarcosinate, Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate, Cocoamidopropyl Betaine, Disodium Lauroamphodiacetate, Glycol Stearate, Sodium PCA, Polyquaternium-7, Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein, Hydrolyzed Soy Protein Mentha Piperita (Peppermint) Oil, Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein, PG-Propyl Silanetriol, Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Extract Fragrance, Iodopropynyl Butylcarbamate, Citric Acid

I separated my hair and washed it in sections following my regular routine. I do like how well this product cleaned my hair, and how clean my scalp felt. I’m not crazy about some of the ingredients, (specifically the Sulfolaurates, I can’t find much info about them) but I did like the performance of this product. It has a medium amount of slip but I don’t detangle my hair with shampoo anyway, so that didn’t bother me much. Overall, I didn’t feel much difference in my hair’s texture, and it cleaned my scalp well.

RATING: 4 Smart – Great product, (mostly) good ingredients, great price*

*As always. This product is available in the Savvy Shop

Savvy Ratings: 5=Savvy 4=Smart 3=Suitable 2=Satisfactory 1=Stupid
