I was SO excited last Thursday when I was invited to the “We Only Blog With the Best” Event at the Georgia NY Boutique in the Nolita section of Manhattan along with fellow fab greenie blogger Yoli Ouiya.

Georgia NY is a great little boutique and spa that specializes in mostly natural/green products for hair and skin. It’s the brainchild of  Jodie Patterson (the store is named after her daughter Georgia), and Kiara Ellozy. They sell many products that you’ve already heard me talk about like Aubrey Organics, Carol’s Daughter, Jane Carter, and Oyin Handmade just to name a few. They also sell KO (KnockOut) Nail Polish which is cruelty-free and comes in those cool “matte” looks. Georgia also has

Alka Seltzer Jewelry Cleaner

ring2

I will never forget the day before my wedding. On the list of things to do, was to stop by the jewelers and get my engagement ring cleaned so that it would be sparkling for my big day. Much to my horror, the jeweler was on vacation and it was really too late to go anywhere else. My cousin suggested that I clean the ring in Alka-Seltzer and water, which I did and it worked! So here’s what I did.

Alka Seltzer Jewelry Cleaner

  • 1 packet (2 tablets) of regular Alka Seltzer (not flavored, and not alka Seltzer Cold Plus)
  • 1 glass
  • 6oz. water

Directions:

Pour water in glass, and drop the tablets into it. Drop jewelry in the same time as the tablets are fizzing. Leave the jewelry in the solution for 5-10 minutes after the tablets have completely dissolved.

Remove jewelry and

Yoga Over 30

Young Woman Meditating on the Floor

My friend Anna is a certified Yoga Instructor in Manhattan, and one day I asked her if she’d write a  post about the benefits of yoga for women (like myself) who are over 30. Here’s her post, lemme know your thoughts…

Yoga is defined “union”. It’s the union of breath and movement. It is described as an 8-limbed approach to find peace. To learn more about the “8-Limbs” click here. The most recognized limb in most of America is Asana- a sanskrit word which literally means “seat”. An Asana is a body position, typically associated with the practice of Yoga, intended primarily to restore and maintain a practitioner’s well-being, improve the body’s flexibility and vitality, and promote the ability to remain in seated meditation for extended periods.

Bottom line… Why try this practice if you are a woman over 30?

There are so many reasons I will start with these and hopefully they are enough to encourage you to get on the mat or outside:

BREATHE AND FOCUS – We do it all the time, but rarely give it thought or breathe deeply enough to truly fill our lungs or focus on emptying them so we can re-energize. One of the goals of the practice is to get your mind to focus on one thing at a time – uniting your breath with the movement- or stillness you are experiencing in a given pose. The hope being that this single-minded focus (on our breathe) will enable us to maintain serenity when faced with a barrage of real-life stressors and BREATHE before responding.

WEIGHT LOSS -I’ve found that once I started to practice I wanted to be more aware of what I ate, when, and how I felt about food. Buddhists believe that we are interconnected to the Ommm (or spirit energy) in all things.  This has made me evaluate what I want to put into my body before class.I find that after a yoga class the last thing in the world I crave is a big hamburger. Test it out and see if your body doesn’t start to crave different kinds of food and

Hair Product Review: Giovanni Smooth As Silk Conditioner

I like Giovanni’s products because they’re made with natural ingredients, they’re vegan, they’re easy to find,  they’re affordable, they’re paraben-free and the packaging is recyclable. I heard a lot about different Giovanni’s shampoos (sulfate-free) and condtioners, but this one caught my eye because it’s made for extremely dry hair.

Giovanni Smooth As Silk Conditioner $7.00

Ingredients: Aqua (Purifed) Water, Rosemary (Rosmarinus Officinalis) Oil, Nettle (Urtica Dioica) Oil, Thyme (Thymus Vulgaris) Oil, Birch (Butela Alba) Leaf Oil, Chamomile (Anthemis Nobilis Flower) Oil, Clary (Salvia Sclarea), Lavender (Lavandula Angustifolia), Coltsfoot Leaf (Tussilago Fargara), Yarrow (Achillea Millefolium) Oil, Mallow (Malya Sylvestris), Horsetail (Equisetum Arvense) Oil, Soybean Protein (Glycine Soja), Cetyl Alcohol (Plant Derived), Stearalkonium Chloride, Tocopherol (Vitamin E), Trace Minerals, Citric Acid (Corn), Sodium Hydroxymethylglycinate, Grapefruit Seed (Citrus Derived)

I LOVE this stuff! It detangles my tight wet curls like a dream. Especially when I use my

Homemade Facial Routine

facial_mask

I tried this the other day and I’ve decided that I’m going to try to do this weekly. There’s basically 8 parts to this facial. Cleanse, exfoliate, steam, exfoliate again, mask, rinse, tone and moisturize.

1. Cleanse – I wash my face with Black Soap. You can find the kind I use here.

2. Exfoliate – homemade scrub
  • Sugar Mommy Scrub*
  • 1 tbsps sugar
  • 1 tbsps olive oil
  • 3 drops of organic rosehip oil
  • 1 drop vanilla extract
  • Whisk all ingredients together in a bowl and massage into face and neck for 2 to 3 minutes

3. Steam – this is the fun part.

  • Boil  filtered or mineral water in a pot on the stove
  • Add one drop each of essentials oils of eucalyptus, rosemary and tea tree oils (skip the rosemary oil if you’re pregnant)
